being intelliGENt

If there is one generation that screams social media, brands, marketing and digital then it has be....any guesses? It is.....Gen Alpha!

During a recent conversation, an acquaintance referred to 'millennials' as a reference to 'early career talent'. I had to interject and correct the context and to share that we have 2 other generations that have already evolved since millennials!

Being a coach and with focused working with students over last 2 years, I have been striving to understand and study motivations and energies of talent that will be ahead of us in the years to come and it makes a lot of business sense to understand the essence of demographics, albeit.. more so now than ever before!

Millennials (born between 1980-1995), Gen Z (born between 1997-2012) and the very latest on the block Gen Alpha (born between 2010-2024) are generations that decide and define our social, political, technological and ecological landscape.

Bringing all attention to Gen Alpha through this writeup, I was pleased to quickly put an illustration together for you! In just 7 years from now, Gen Alpha will be part of our workforce and how! It is going to be the single largest digitally native generation that we have ever witnessed.

It's intriguing to know that most of Gen Alpha have parents who are Gen Z's, and Gen Z's are believed to have a parenting style of soft parenting, intentional parenting and more accepting. Gen Alpha are being raised in smaller and constantly evolving families, they are digital natives, totally tech savvy, globally connected, diverse....infact, this is the first generation that is totally global and diverse in mindset.

More than 2.4Mn Gen Alpha are born globally each week. 49% of Gen Alpha trust influencers as much as family for purchasing decisions, their spending will surpass that of all generations by 2034.

A sneak peek into their motivations will help empathise and prepare ourselves in our personal and professional decisions, various studies indicate below attributes:

  • Digital immersion is non-negotiable
  • Creativity is the currency
  • Spirit of entrepreneurship runs deep
  • Global mindset
  • Mental and emotional wellbeing is paramount
  • Authenticity triumphs all
  • Engagement over presence
  • Purpose and sustainability at the heart of things

Talk about slangs, and that is an evolving space! Missing out on that could mean a huge gap in communications and building relationships! If you know the slang a Gen Alpha will know that you ate it! (Ate: used to describe something impressive or outstanding)

Short form content is and will be the most preferred AI, AR, VR and more! It's stunning to recognise that the incoming technology to Gen Alpha are Instagram, Siri, 3D printers and so on and it's important for us to get their starting point!

Brace yourself as next year will welcome Gen Beta :) and nomenclatures will follow...

So, what can we do to know and understand better....few things that will be non negotiable are to listen actively, to observe closely, to accept fully, to unlearn and to learn quickly. The real power is being in the moment, and that means 'in the moment'.

I will continue this series on Gen talks where I will share details, data and statistics so that we all put our best foot forward - think, design, articulate and resonate !

Thank you and happy reading.
