Being First

Jesse Wente was announced as the new Canada Council for the Arts Chair on July 28 2020 [1]. While I am not a regular CBC Metro Morning listener (as I do not live in Toronto), I have known Jesse for many years as being an art critic, and an advocate for increased visibility of minorities, specifically Indigenous peoples.
I wish I could find the interview where I heard this announced, but alas, I will need to rely on my imperfect memory. While being named as Chair for this prestigious post would be a notable event for anyone, many people highlighted that Jesse is the 1st Indigenous person to fill the role, and wanted his views on that. Jesse was more excited to talk about the work he intends to do, and he is rather humble regarding his many achievements. However, he went on to say that being first is not something to really pay attention to. He would rather be the 20th, the 100th or the 10 000th - because being the first does not necessarily mean there will be a second, third or any more. The first is just a beginning, and as Derek Sivers points out in his viral YouTube video[2], the followers are far more important than the first. The first can be alone - it is the followers that can make a movement.
Such is the case with my company Beyond Safety Compliance. I am nowhere near the first. The Human Performance, Root Cause Analysis and Trending conference celebrated its 25th year anniversary in 2019. I am following a great number of companies and individuals who have been working in this space and creating the movement for some time.
It is always dangerous to create lists, as the mere existence of a list tends to suggest it is exhaustive (or at least, this is what we take from lists). Please be aware that I cannot claim to know all the players in this area, but I would like to acknowledge those I do know as being more foundational “firsts” that I am indebted to, and whose movement I am joining.

4 年Blimey very humbled to be mentioned Tanya thank you. When I started my podcast I was so nieve, I thought why doesn't anyone else think like this, I must be special ??! Part of that is due to I think the UK is quite a bit behind others... Non the less the community that opened their door to me have taught me so much. I get a sense of a positive looking snowball affect starting, I feel we are breaking out of our echo chambers and people are starting to talk about this stuff!! Exciting times!

4 年I love community! We are all better together. Which doesn't mean agreeing, or being the same, or even liking each other - it's a cohesive force which leverages us far beyond our meagre individual contribution or impact. Thanks for being connected :-)
