Will Being an Entrepreneur Mom Hurt My Kids?

Will Being an Entrepreneur Mom Hurt My Kids?

This is my deepest darkest entrepreneur mom fear: That me pursuing my dreams will somehow be harmful to my kids.

And since we are just a couple of entrepreneur moms being completely honest with each other, it’s held me back more times than I’d like to admit. I manage it, I starve it, but I don’t get rid of it all together. Because at the heart of this fear is a truth that I hold dear.

Nothing is more important to me than my family. And while I want success in business. I don’t want it more than I want to be a great mom.

So the fear and I coexist and try to find a healthy balance. And guess what? I’m not the only one to have this fear.

I talk to entrepreneur moms on a regular basis who worry that pursuing their dreams in business is taking them away from their kids, or causing chaos at home, or even sometimes that it’s just plain selfish.

I was talking with a mom last week who has a beautiful dream to start a company helping women heal from traumatic divorce. But, as we were talking, I could hear this fear creeping in. Can she pursue the company and be a great mom? How can she do it without her family having to sacrifice?

And I was completely honest with her. Yes you can be a great mom and build a company. No, you can’t do it without your family paying a price. There’s always a price to pay for success!

The idea that we will be able to run successful companies, function like a stay at home mom, stay perfectly in shape, keep the house clean, and not be a stressed out beast all the time is ludicrous.

In this week’s youtube video, I decided to get really honest about the price my family has paid for me to pursue business growth. I talk about the good, the bad, the hard, and the regrets.

Why? Because, the shimmery entrepreneur mom life we see on Instagram is misleading and it sets us up for feeling like we are failing because we can’t maintain the impossible lifestyle we see.

And because every time an entrepreneur mom has opened up to me and been honest with me about the journey, it’s been incredibly helpful.

So get cozy while I get honest about how my family has benefited and sacrificed as I’ve pursued my dreams. I’ll also get honest about why I don’t play the mom guilt game anymore.

Entrepreneur moms you can be a great mom and business owner, but you’ll give up a lot in order to do both. Are you ready for it?

When I took an entrepreneurial leap, I gathered my family for a goal-setting session. Everyone contributed to the list of what would make our lives better. I told them I felt like we could have all of it within five years with the change I was making. When I wasn't with them, they would know I was on purpose for our family. Then I asked for their support. (And we had it all year 4!)

I always love this question. I have always felt like showing your children what success takes, can not be taught. I have told my 13 year old daughter that if she creates social media content I will pay her per like. This is such a good lesson for her to learn, and it is beneficial to me also. I get to show her how research, design, & create useful content.?
