Courage is defined as the ability to be in action in the face of fear. Fear is an induced and acquired emotion in all human beings. A birth a human child doesn’t have any fear. It is the society that programs and conditions a human child by its repeated nos and don’ts. It is said that a human child hears “no” 1.46 lakh times before the age of 14.
?FEAR is false evidence appearing real. Fear is imaginary and anticipated pain. It comes out of one’s past experiences or the interpretation of past events and experiences.
?Fear can be classified into authentic fears and inauthentic fears. Authentic fears are the genuine fears that can threaten one’s life. Inauthentic fears are those that are purely imaginary and a figment of one’s imagination. Its origin can be hearsay, negative interpretations of past events, or negative programming or conditioning of the society. Inauthentic fears have no factual base and are only a figment of one’s imagination. It is said that 99% of our fears are inauthentic and only 1% of the fears are authentic. It is due to this that most of the fears we have never come to pass.
?Human beings have two primary emotions—fear and love. Most of the other emotions exhibited by humans all arise from either fear or love. The antidote for fear is faith. It is said that on a scale of 1 to 10, if one has faith of up to 6, then the other portion is occupied by fear. Hence, the greater faith one has in the self or in God, the less one fears. Another universal truth is that until the last day of your life you are bound to experience fear. Fear is inevitable. Fear’s negative consequence is that it stops people and makes them go into inaction with a consequent loss of power, growth, and success. The ability to be present to the feelings of fear and yet be in action toward the achievement of predetermined goals is called courage.
?It is now a proven fact that the only way to overcome fear is to go through it. We are told to learn to dance and play with fear. This ability is what characterizes all great achievers. The four Cs that are required for success are commitment, courage, capability, and confidence. To achieve breakthrough results, the primary quality is courage. It has been observed that many times we make huge commitments, but most get stopped when it comes to taking action, and as a result, no progress is made and the commitment remains on paper. Also, only through action, that is, courage, will one gain experience and improve one’s capability. Similarly, only through action, that is, courage, will we achieve results that will boost our confidence. Hence, it comes back once again to the fact that being in action in the face of fear (courage) is at the root of any breakthrough results. It is only through repeated action that one will gain experience and capability. The root of capability building is, once again, courage.
?Each of us, if we look back at our own lives, can say that we had breakthrough success in life when we took risks and action in the face of the uncomfortable feelings of fear. We need to remember that in the future we will achieve breakthrough results only when we confront fear and take action towards a daunting aspirational goal we have set.
?Two of the biggest fears in the sales field are the fear of failure and the fear of rejection. It is said that eight out of ten people who start off on the journey of sales quit the selling profession due to their inability to face the fear of rejection and the fear of failure. Less than 20% of salespeople who overcome the fear of failure and rejection do this by not taking the fear of failure and fear of rejection personally. They take every failure to mean a first attempt in learning and rejection as feedback for further improvement. This is the hallmark of a master salesperson.
?A person who truly demonstrates this quality of courage whom I have known personally for more than a decade is my friend, Mr. Mayur Nayak, a Chartered Accountant practicing out of Mumbai and is recognized and respected today as the leading expert and authority in the field of FEMA and international taxation and finance. He has authored more than seven books in this area of specialization, many of which have become bestsellers and are internationally recognized as valuable contributions to the field of international taxation and finance.
?He was the president of the Bombay Chartered Accounts Society, 2020-11, which is the largest voluntary body of chartered accountants in India with over 9,000 members. He is the recipient of the Ness Wadia Scholar of the Year award for the year 2010-11 for his contribution to the profession of chartered accountancy and especially in the field of international taxation.
?Mayur was born into a very humble and economically challenged family of five siblings, and his family struggled to make ends meet. He studied in Guajarati medium and, by dint of hard work, persistence, and courage, completed his studies to become a chartered accountant. He literally financed his own education by working part time while pursuing his accounting studies.
?His quality of courage really stands out when, upon completing his CA, he chose to specialize in the field of FERA and international taxation and finance. This nascent field was not pursued by many qualified CAs. Many of his colleagues who also ventured out with him in specializing in the field of international taxation left the field and started general practice. Mayur persisted relentlessly for 10 long years before even getting the first big break. I emphasize—10 years of perseverance, especially when you have a weak economic background. This calls for a tremendous amount of courage, willpower, and self-belief. This courage has helped him today to be recognized as the authority in the field not only nationally, but also internationally, giving him a name and a lot of fame, wealth, and fulfillment.
