On Being Coachable...

On Being Coachable...

1.??????This Week's Hot Tips:

Picture it… Two grown women having a heated debate in a park while walking their dogs.?In a moment, the conversation shifts to a reasonable and collaborative tone. They are laughing and enjoying each other’s company once again.

What happened? Real-life coaching…

One of my favorite coaches once told me, “It’s hard to read the label from inside the bottle.” ?Meaning, we can’t see our blind spots and/or how to work around them. When the stickiness or tension shows up,?a question that I often ask my clients (and myself) is, “Are you being coachable in this moment?” ?So, what does that look like?

  • ?Be open-minded: Have an open mind and a willingness to learn. Recognize that the other person has valuable insights and experiences that can help you grow and develop.
  • ?Be accountable: Take responsibility for your growth, your development, and your actions/inactions.
  • Be patient: Remember that change takes time and effort. Don't expect immediate results and be willing to put in the work to achieve your goals.
  • Be gracious: Don't take feedback personally or become defensive. Instead, try to understand how you can use the feedback to improve.
  • Be present: Listen carefully and ask clarifying questions.
  • Take action: Act on the feedback you receive. Coaching is only as good as the action that is taken.

Quick update… My sister and I made up when we both took time to be coachable. ?

“My best skill was that I was coachable. I was a sponge and aggressive to learn.” -- Michael Jordan

5. Ask Keita:

Q. Hey Keita, I am stuck and frustrated with my consulting business. I have hired several coaches and I can’t seem to get the results I want. What do you think I should consider before hiring my next coach?

A: ?Thank you for putting me on the spot. Having been on both sides of this coin, I would suggest pausing for a moment. Reflect on what you liked and did not like about your previous experience.?Acknowledge what you did learn and carry it with you. Then, take an honest self-inventory.?How coachable were you in those engagements? Did you take consistent action?

If you are ready for coaching or need tips on how to be more coachable, I am extending a personal invitation to have a brainstorming session with me. Book some time here .

Let's get after it!
