On Being a Better Consumer of Online Political News
David Bloom
Journalist, host, consultant covering the collision of Hollywood and Silicon Valley
My latest Tubefilter column suggests some ideas on how to deal with the major media outlets that will shape how many of us see politics going forward (i.e., self-professed “tech companies” Twitter and Facebook), and with ensuring that we get an array of information that doesn’t just feed into our confirmation biases with self-reinforcing fake news.
Despite Mark Zuckerberg's latest protestations, it's hard to argue that the Facebook and Twitter algorithms had a completely benign impact on this year's elections.
They will be more important than ever next time, so it's vital that as media consumers we get better at navigating the information the sites are presenting to us, based on algorithmic rules virtually no one (not even their creators) completely understand.
