Being the Best Boss is just 3Ps away!
"Would I rather be feared or loved? Um…easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."
Being a boss is the hidden dream of every individual in the corporate world. While you have access to the displayed perks, unfortunately the darker side of it also needs to be juggled. It is by maintaining a balance between both these sides of the coin that one is able to achieve the title of Best Boss. Let’s face it, this is easier to be said than done. All managers have their own strategies when it comes to handling their subordinates, but following the 3Ps is always going to give you a heads up in the game.
- Presence
A great boss is always there for his employees, whether it is for guidance, motivation or even just to overlook at his team and be there when needed. This feature tends to build gratitude among employees and eventually result in them showing the same action towards their boss. This does necessarily not mean the physical presence of the individual but even the thought that he or she would always be there to support their employees is a thought that can carry a long way. A boss as such will take real risks that involve a reward that is worth it. Their presence helps employees maintain straight state of mind and they tend to be more focused when their boss is around.
- Praise
Being the ideal boss or manager does not involve achieving organisational and personal goals, but whereas there is an obligation towards helping their subordinates to achieve their goals and objectives as well. This involves a constant monitor and regular feedback to be given to their employees. While many managers tend to do follow this only when there is a negative feedback, it is important to provide constructive feedback and praise for a job well done as well. After all no individual develops liking on the person who only picks on the negatives and overlooks the positives. This does not mean you need to constantly praise your subordinates and overlook all their flaws, but whereas be a mentor who is genuinely available to guide them to do better.
- Promise
Every employee has goals and dreams that they want to achieve career wise. Usually during recruitment bosses should tend to make promises that could help the candidate achieve their dreams. You don’t want to make undue or unwarranted promises of course, but you are committed to helping your team members grow and develop and they know it. You seek out training and development opportunities for them and encourage them to go. You give them realistic “stretch” goals to help them develop skills. Promises made have to be kept, and making a commitment to help your employees grow is big enough to keep them content.
A good boss will enlighten their employees about any training and development opportunities that they think will benefit them in any way. A great boss will inspire their employees to work harder and be better at what they do.
