Child development psychology says when a child is between 3-6 years old they are learning how to fit in. When you were in that stage you “decided to fit in to blend in". This was an instinctive action. You knew you must belong to survive. Depending on your surroundings, the people involved, and your interpretation of what was going on set you up for how you see and live your life now.

In kindergarten amongst 20 other excited kids smiling and laughing, the teacher asks us to introduce ourselves. When it's my turn I stand up and happily proclaimed “Hi I’m Steffany Lee and I’m so excited to be here!” As I smile I notice the kids looking at me totally confused. The teacher then says this is Steffany Lee and she is so excited to be here. They couldn’t understand me! My accent is too thick! In that moment I decided "I have to be like you to be liked by you". Fast forward to 2021 I’m at a baby shower talking and laughing with those at my table. When my friend and I get in the car she says "OMG! Listening to you is amazing! Your accent change with each person you spoke with!" How many times have I became someone I wasn’t to "be accepted"?

Ever notice how you act differently around various people and in various situations? Sometimes to the point where you don’t recognize who you are or even like yourself. After that AHA moment I really pay attention to who I am, and if I feel off, I’ll ask myself “Is this me?”

A cousin was visiting the house. This cousin doesn’t talk to me, and when we are together she continuously interrupts me and changes the subject. My aunt always told me “she’s your cousin.” After my cousin left, a voice asked me “If she was a stranger and you had met her at an event would you befriend her?” This was another mind shifting moment as my answer was No! I don’t like her, her energy or how she is as a person. I then heard my aunt’s voice reminding me that she is my cousin. With this new found awareness I knew it didn’t matter that she was related to me. I get to choose who is in my life.?

These incidents and a few others have shifted my life. Amazing people regularly show up in my life, and now I see myself as their equal graciously receiving their beautiful energy. People always tell me “You’re so genuine.” When I look back, I see that I was being authentic. Now I have the power to stop those I don’t align with from staying.?
