Being Anasuria: Callum Chesshire, Senior HSE Advisor
Today, we would like to introduce Callum Chesshire, Senior HSE Advisor at AOC. Callum has worked for AOC since joining at the end of 2022 and has become a big part of our AOC family.
Callum brings with him a wealth of HSE knowledge, along with a great sense of humour, and we had the opportunity to get to know him a little better, finding out more about his career history, his thoughts on working for AOC, and what his superpower would be!
Read more about Callum below.
PROFESSIONAL FIVE
1.???? How did you end up working in HSE?
After completing my degree in sports science at Heriot-Watt University, I realised I didn’t want to become a PE teacher and was unsure about my career path. So, after finishing uni in 2011, I took a gap year to Koh Tao in Thailand and worked as a scuba diving instructor for a year. Eventually, I decided it was time to return home and pursue a "real" job, so I completed a NEBOSH health & safety course [Which taught me that there is an expectation to keep your life saving PPE on at all times!] .
2.???? What's your career history?
I got into Wood Group’s three year HSE graduate programme, working in construction and engineering. I was seconded to EnQuest from 2014 to 2019, where I gained a huge amount of experience, including covering the offshore HSE safety advisor position on the Thistle, Northern Producer and EnQuest Producer platforms. This is also where I met Morag Kidd . I returned to Wood in 2019 before joining Petrofac, looking after the Kittiwake installation, and then joined AOC in October 2022.
3.???? What's your favourite AOC value and how does it align with you?
I like all the values! Be Progressive, as it sets an expectation that we should always be doing things better and shows us that there is always room for improvement. Be Authentic, as it encourages us to be honest and also be ourselves. I also like Be Exceptional, as it makes us push the boundaries and be the best we can be. Finally Be Empowered, as it empowers us to do things, but also have accountability where we can learn to put our hands up from failures and accept them when they occur.
4.???? What's the best thing about working at AOC?
At AOC, I appreciate that I get recognised when I perform well and receive constructive feedback when needed which always helps towards continuous improvement. My advice to potential candidates considering joining AOC is to embrace this environment where you can genuinely make a difference and grow professionally.
5.???? What are you most looking forward to in your role at AOC?
I am most looking forward to the two new subsea tiebacks, it’s clear that these are critical for the long term success of the Anasuria, so I look forward to working with the team to deliver these significant scopes of work safely.
FUN FIVE
1.???? Fun fact about you that we might not know
When I was 12, I moved to Paris with my family and attended secondary school there. I also worked as a bouncer at a nightclub in Edinburgh while at university.
2.???? If you could instantly learn any new skill, what would it be?
I would love to master welding. I can do many things but not lots of things really well. Good welding is a skill, and I’d rather learn and appreciate my own hard work, than hire someone else. I once sent a photo of my welding to Mike Shearer and he told me it was called gorilla welding – ugly but strong as hell.
3.???? Most commonly used emojis
????????– (these were proof-checked!)
4.???? If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, famous or not, who would you choose?
I’d love to have an opportunity to eat and share stories with the podcasters I currently listen to: Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson & the guys from Triggernometry.
5.???? If you had to be locked in an escape room with one other AOC employee, who would it be and why?
I would choose Paul Osunna Dike, CEng because he looks like he could kick down a door with ease, and Jay Ibiba I. - he’s responsible for HVAC and would know how to escape through it! Finally, to be on the safe side, we’d probably want to invite Ewen Libby as I don’t want to break up the remote island duo.
