Being an Ally to the LGBTQIA+ Community: A Commitment to Kindness and Support
Jane Donnelly
Global Talent Acquisition Manager (Director of First Impressions ) and Diversity & Inclusion Advocate. ??
In today's world, being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community is not just about standing in solidarity; it is about actively supporting, amplifying voices, and creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
As a dedicated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) advocate, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of allyship and the profound impact it can have on individuals and organisations alike.
The Role of an Ally
To be an ally means more than just voicing support; it means taking action. It involves educating oneself about the issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, speaking out against discrimination, and fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding. It requires a commitment to continuous learning and unlearning, recognising one's own biases, and actively working to dismantle them.
My Journey as a DEI Advocate
Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to promoting DEI initiatives and ensuring that marginalised voices are heard and valued. One of the most rewarding aspects of this work has been the opportunity to support individuals who may have felt they couldn't speak up without the backing of allies and friends. By creating safe spaces and platforms for these voices, we not only empower individuals but also enrich our communities and organizations with diverse perspectives and experiences.
Practical Steps to Show Support
Listen and Learn: Educate yourself about LGBTQIA+ issues, history, and the challenges faced by the community. Listen to the stories and experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals without judgment or preconceived notions.

Speak Up: When you witness discrimination or hear derogatory comments, speak out. Use your voice to challenge stereotypes and advocate for respectful and inclusive language.
Support LGBTQIA+ Organisations: Contribute your time, resources, or expertise to organisations that support LGBTQIA+ rights and initiatives. Your involvement can make a significant difference.
Create Inclusive Spaces: Whether it's in the workplace, at school, or in your community, strive to create environments where everyone feels welcome and valued. Implement inclusive policies and practices that support diversity.
Amplify Voices: Use your platform to elevate the voices of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Share their stories, support their initiatives, and ensure they have the space to express themselves authentically.
The Golden Rule: Treat Others How You Expect to Be Treated
At some point in our lives, we all need someone to be our advocate. In this day and age, it is more important than ever to abide by the golden rule: treat others how you expect to be treated. This fundamental principle of empathy and respect is the cornerstone of effective allyship. By putting ourselves in others' shoes, we can better understand their struggles and stand by them in solidarity.
Being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community is a journey of compassion, education, and action. It is about leveraging our privilege to support those who may not have felt they could use their voices. As allies, we have the power to create a more inclusive and equitable world where everyone is free to be their true selves. Let us commit to this journey together, guided by kindness, empathy, and the unwavering belief in the dignity and worth of every individual.
Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can be the change.
