Being Agile vs Doing Agile

Being Agile vs Doing Agile

As businesses continue to navigate an ever-changing tech landscape, the terms "being agile" and "doing agile" have become commonplace. While these phrases may sound similar, there are key differences that can have a significant impact on the success of a tech business.

When a company is "being agile," it means that they have fully embraced the agile mindset. They prioritize flexibility, collaboration, and constant adaptation, rather than sticking to a rigid plan. Being agile requires a cultural shift within a company, with every member of the team working together to create a more adaptable and responsive organisation.

On the other hand, "doing agile" refers more to the specific practices and methodologies that are used to implement agile principles. This can include tools like Scrum or Kanban, daily stand-up meetings, and iterative development cycles. While these practices can certainly be effective, they are not enough on their own to create a truly agile organisation.

The distinction between being agile and doing agile is an important one, as many companies mistakenly believe that simply adopting agile practices is enough to transform their organisation. In reality, being agile requires a fundamental shift in the way a business operates, with a focus on constant learning, collaboration, and adaptability.

That being said, it's important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to becoming an agile organisation. Each company will have its own unique challenges and opportunities, and it's up to leadership to determine the best path forward.

Ultimately, the key to success in today's fast-paced tech landscape is agility. By prioritizing the agile mindset and embracing a culture of constant learning and adaptation, businesses can stay ahead of the curve and thrive in an ever-changing market.

In my early career days I used to whole heartedly believe any company could transform to agile ways of working, with the right support and guidance. Arhh naivety can be a wonderful thing!! Actual experience has taught me very differently, having been involved with numerous transformations and the original shift from waterfall to agile, some transformations will never succeed (fully at least)! Some big companies are still several years deep into transformations. In my experience People are the biggest blockers, especially in regards to Rock Stars/Managers/Teams that have crafted out a part of the company for themselves, they are comfortable with the status Quo and don't want to change, even actively putting up blockers using delaying tactics, slander, you name it. My favourite quote was "We are little a agile, not big A agile" When I hear conversations like the above, I know we have started to reach the limits of the companies transformation capabilities they are comfortable with My go to now days is Simon Powers Agile Onion - https://www.adventureswithagile.com/consultancy/powers-definition-agile-mind-set/

“Flexible agile” or “Agile for us” is one way to adapt “agile” practice in a less combatting way. Essentially more likely to stick as change isn’t easy for people! #agile
