Being an active member of your network

In each edition of this newsletter, we give you an idea of the building blocks that make up your dream career: the bite-size introductions, conversations, and learning courses. On LinkedIn, these come alive as simple actions like writing a short post, sending a quick connection request, or a “follow” of a Company Page that you’re interested in. Getting a hang of these habits is an investment in your future, and today we’re spotlighting some of the practices that we—and your fellow LinkedIn members—personally attest to having great results:

  • #HowIUseLinkedIn advice from others
  • Eight basic actions anyone can take
  • Catching up with games and your connections
  • Engage with verified Company Pages

Learn #HowIUseLinkedIn to make connections

Creating your profile on LinkedIn is a great start to growing your career, but it’s not something you can just set and forget. Begin by adding the basics like a profile photo, which will help you receive up to three times more connection requests. Then, as your job and life needs change, so should the way you use LinkedIn. Regularly making adjustments will help you get the most value out of this platform—your profile is up to 4.2x more likely to get viewed by recruiters if you have a current position listed. As you think about which other actions will help you achieve your professional goals, LinkedIn members are sharing their own methods using the hashtag #HowIUseLinkedIn .?

In this video, Neal Sivadas shares how he adapted his activity online to land a job as a recent grad:

Quick tips: There are eight basic actions that statistically improve the LinkedIn experience as you build your network and your personal brand. They are:?

  1. Have more than five skills listed
  2. Have a profile photo
  3. Have more than one position listed in work history
  4. Respond to messages within 24 hours
  5. Get to 50 connections
  6. Follow five or more company pages
  7. React to posts
  8. Comment on posts once a week

Catch up with your network through daily games?

We’ve talked about the new games on LinkedIn and how they’re a unique way to build relationships with your professional network. In the new Catch Up tab , you’ll find games like Pinpoint, Queens, and Crossclimb alongside your network’s most relevant updates. Now, when you add a few of these daily games into your routine, you’ll also be able nurture your network with meaningful conversations over some friendly competition.

Spark reconnections by sharing how you did and discussing strategies. Ongoing check-ins through these games and updates will keep you top-of-mind with your connections, opening the door to fresh career opportunities, collaborations, and professional growth.

Be a “tall poppy” and celebrate your wins

What keeps you from sharing your work wins? In the workplace, people often feel scared they’ll be criticized if they come across as too ambitious or confident. In Australia and New Zealand this is referred to as “tall poppy syndrome,” but many other countries around the world have their own version of this same phenomenon.?

The truth is, this mindset is holding you back. You will grow your career by outgrowing limiting beliefs and focusing on actions that boost your confidence, such as finding supportive colleagues who celebrate your strengths—just as you recognize theirs! LinkedIn members are sharing advice reframing “tall poppy syndrome” to grow tall in your career. Read what others are saying and add your own thoughts here .
