Being able to pick up the phone and call a stranger is a competitive advantage.
Took a bunch of selfies at a recent EO NYC event at the Hudson - Personal Development event.

Being able to pick up the phone and call a stranger is a competitive advantage.

Not sure if you know this but growing up a bit over 2 decades ago, we did not have caller id. The phone would ring and we would have to pick it up.?

Watch a Seinfeld episode and you will see how that works if you are curious and cannot comprehend how a phone would ring and you would just pick it up.?

Well in today's text first culture, we might feel compelled to NOT CALL. Be afraid of interrupting someone.?

Here is how I look at it.?

If you are not available, do not pick up the phone. If you pick up the phone, I will talk to you.?

It's like walking over to someone at a networking event while they are talking to someone else and making a quick comment.?

“Hey Sally, Sorry for interrupting, I just wanted to pass by and say, love the new look!”

Sally loves that! I love that and the person talking to Sally is intrigued, like who is that?

When I call you up, do you pick up right away?

If you are picking up, you are thinking 1 of three things.?

  1. Is this a client? Family? Friend? Someone I know?
  2. Is this a prospect? Someone that wants to help me?
  3. Is this a salesperson? Someone that is wasting my time.?

I quickly want to go from bucket 3 to bucket 1 as fast as possible and knowing how to do that is a competitive advantage.?

Do you have the courage to call people and create that connection?

It's called rapport and people have no idea how to pronounce that word, what it means, or let alone how to make that connection.?

Let's do a quick google search and see what Google says it means.?

Google Search: a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other's feelings or ideas and communicate well.

"She was able to establish a good rapport with the children"

AHA! So it means understanding FEELINGS.?

So if you understand how someone feels from their TONE of voice on the phone, you can adjust your OWN TONE TO MATCH THAT and create a trusting effect with the person on the other side of the phone.?

The people who call me and try to sell me stuff ARE NOT CONSIDERING ME.?

They are annoying.?

I just called MILI who was a new LinkedIn connection.?

I used one of the technologies we teach in our course and coaching program to find her cell phone number and I just picked up the phone and called her.?

She picked up and said, Hello…

I introduced myself and used information on her profile to quickly build rapport.?

She was SO HAPPY I CALLED.?

We connected for over 12 minutes and after she WhatsApped me asking me if we can meet to get to know each other better. I said YES! I would love to meet her when I am in Miami next.?

My 9 am call had a car accident and he could not make it, so instead, I called Mili and built a relationship going from bucket 3 to bucket 1 in minutes. Now I can call her anytime I want and build that relationship deeper.?

She is also the TYPE that likes when you call. Not everyone likes it.?

But if you find 100 people in your network that LOVE when you call them and DO NOT GET ANNOYED at you when you call, you will have a CONNECTED NETWORK.?

I personally have a CONNECTED network of people who LOVE WHEN I CALL OUT OF THE BLUE.?

Do you have a connected network? If not BUILD ONE and get to know people.?

When I'm in the car, I am able to put my phone on Bluetooth and I have 100 people I can dial out to and have quick meaningful conversations.?

The way you build this is by getting used to just calling people and knowing what to say. I call prospects, I call networking relationships, I call everyone because I am no longer afraid.?

I used to be afraid of bothering people but I quickly have learned that people actually like it.?

They love when you ADD VALUE to their life. So I suggest you use the phone as a competitive advantage and call people more often.?

What do you think about the prospect of just calling someone out of the blue?

The reality is if you are not ok with calling people, you will miss out on TONS of opportunities that can come your way.?

IT'S A SKILL just like any other and the practice will make you GET OVER THE FEAR.?

This skill is so important in fact it will help you with EVERY AREA OF YOUR LIFE.?

From relationships to business to health to literally every area because you will be great at communicating.?

Stopping someone in their tracks and making them like you, is a skill, not a talent.?

You can learn this but you first have to understand that your beliefs about people-pleasing, or interrupting will stop you from even trying.?

Fear is built up from past experiences and it's the new experiences that make all the difference to breaking through that fear.?

If you need help with this, I am happy to share my experience and show you the way.?

A lot of my B to C business is cold calling. Building rapport is key. Great article. I really like the clip of Tony Robbins, too.

Texting to ask permission to call was a subject of a recent discussion when I was with several senior executives at mid to large cos, including a CEO, and they unanimously agreed they never take calls. Way back when I taught “Cold Calling That Gets Results” and I can do it for sure but would much prefer a warm call. That being said, cold calling marathons with highly focused calls to a very targeted list can get results as long as you are trained, confident, and have the right words. Just so there’s no confusion, calling a LinkedIn connection with whom you’ve traded DMs is not what I mean:) Cold, as in, icy, is where you hone skills and stamina. It also helps to have a good foundation of biz.
