Behind the Scenes: Writing "The Feel Good Business Model" Our New Book!

For quite a few years now, Scott (my husband and I) have been running and growing businesses. All of these businesses we started from scratch and they have grown over time.

If you would have told me 15 years ago, that I would be running my own businesses, working three days a week, making as much money as I wanted, helping people and doing work that I loved…. I would have thought you were crazy. But here we are and it honestly feels like a dream come true.

Rewind the tape to 15 years ago…. I was working 60+ hours a week, working my butt off in a job that was demanding, high stress, never ending… and at the end of the day, I was always replaceable. I was so far deep in the weeds, that I didn’t know what else was out there for me. I was stuck in a cycle of coming home so exhausted, that I had no energy to even think about what else I could be doing. I put my happiness on the back burner and I let me student loan debt scare me into thinking I had no other option.

I know so many other people who have found themselves in this vicious cycle. It’s easy to do, when you experience scarcity and fear. Fear that I couldn’t pay my bills, fear that I if I tried to do something else I wouldn’t be as successful or make anywhere near the money I was making, fear that I would be fired. I get a sick feeling, just thinking about how I felt. After 10 years of this, I not only was burnt out physically (was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos) and emotionally (I experienced the traumatic loss of my Dad that sent me into a spiral), I hit a breaking point.

I quit without having a clear cut business plan. Just the will and belief that I would figure it out. I threw myself out of the nest, because I couldn’t take one more day. I knew that I would scratch and claw my way into doing whatever I had to do, into building my OWN business, so that I could set my own boundaries, I could choose how to spend my time and so that I could do the work that really mattered to me. That mission fueled me for years as I built my business. After several years though, I realized I was falling back into some old patterns so I knew I had to create a framework in order to achieve the life and business I was ultimately looking to create.

When I met Scott (my now husband), I finally found someone who was looking for the same thing I was. Freedom and flexibility from the “live to work” behavior we had constantly found ourself trapped in. We decided we could no longer trade time for dollars. TIME, we both agreed is the MOST important thing and we both set out to build our business both separately and together with this being a number one priority.

As we grew our consulting and agency practices, we started strategically building out boundaries and structure around what we did, to ensure that we always had freedom and flexibility as we grew. Our first goal, started out just to hit enough money so that we could cover all expenses and pay ourselves. Our next goal was to make enough so that we could start our own 401k and contribute to our retirement. Our next goal was to start making recurring revenue, without involving a ton of our time. Then our goal was to keep this growing. We have done so every year with determination and gratitude.

We have shaped these businesses and grown them into business that honestly feel good to run. The small and mighty team we have, are amazing and I’m so grateful each and everyday for the ability to do what we do.

We are so excited to share this framework in our new book (coming soon!), The Feel Good Business Model, if you’d like to join the waitlist, click here: https://www.thetimetogrow.com/FeelGoodBusiness
