Behind the scenes of withdrawing a job offer after acceptance & signature

Job offer stage is indeed the most exciting part of the recruitment process. Once a job offer has been made and accepted by a candidate, not only it could be generally considered a legally binding agreement but here’s what happens behind the scenes (that you should know of):

But before, let’s explore some of the reasons why a candidate might decide to withdraw from a job offer after signing it:

  1. It could be that the candidate receives a more attractive job offer from another company
  2. The candidate gives it a second thought & decides that the job is not right for them
  3. ?Unforeseen personal circumstances, such as a health issue or family emergency, or a sudden relocation… could also cause a candidate to withdraw from a job offer.

Withdrawing a job offer after signing it can have several potential consequences for both the employer and the candidate. It’s vital to know that withdrawing from a job offer can damage your reputation & credibility as a candidate, particularly if the withdrawal happens after the employer has already begun to make arrangements for their arrival, or if the joining date is already very close, specially if the reasons of withdrawal were not communicated earlier with honesty. Furthermore, keep in mind that in some cases, you (candidate) may be required to pay back any expenses the employer incurred as a result of their withdrawal.

However, for the employer, the consequences can be more significant. Depending on the timing of the withdrawal, the employer/recruitment agency may have already turned down other candidates, so not only they are left without a suitable replacement but also they have turned down finalist(s) that were competing with you and most likely who had a great chance of being selected and a greater interest in the role. This can be particularly problematic if the position is crucial to the business or the timing of the withdrawal coincides with a busy period. Moreover, the employer may have to start the recruitment process all over again, which can be time-consuming and costly.

To minimize the chances of a job offer withdrawal you as a candidate are invited to:

  • thoroughly research the company and the job before accepting the offer
  • be transparent about your intentions and any potential issues that could arise, such as scheduling conflicts or personal circumstances (specially)
  • avoid accepting a job offer purely as a backup plan

Similarly, employers are invited to:

  • Provide as much accurate information as possible about the job, including the responsibilities, work environment, context, teams’ dynamics, culture, challenges… and any other factors that could impact the candidate's decision to accept the job.
  • Set clear expectations about the timeline and any pre-employment requirements.
  • Continuous check-in calls with the offered candidate (specially as the joining date approaches) and gauge the motivation & candidate readiness.

In conclusion, withdrawing from a job offer after signing it can have significant consequences for both the employer and the candidate. However, sometimes strong reasons might force you, in this case, just like in any other important life subject, open communication, honesty, and, transparency is your key to avoiding misunderstandings and risking your employability reputation in the marketplace.
