Behind The Scenes: The Podcast Process

Hi everyone!

Welcome to another exceptional newsletter edition, where I'll show you the mechanics behind the podcast ??.

Many times, I have been asked about (and appreciated for) the process behind the workshops work podcast. So maybe you are also curious to get a glimpse into my way of working. Since the beginning, I have followed the same steps. A tedious process, but it seems to be working great, so I just stick by it ??

1?? I find new guests for the show via recommendations from previous guests or listeners, I also reach out to someone who catches my curiosity via a (blog) post or comment on social media (mostly LinkedIn, I admit). And sometimes someones reaches out to offer themselves as a guest on my show.

2?? I send them a brief in which I explain the purpose of the show, share insights about the audience - although I haven't met most of the almost 2000 weekly listeners - the process and statistics.

3?? We schedule a 30 minute "exploration call" with two aims: (1) Exploring topics that could be of interest to the audience and (2) check the general chemistry between us. As soon as I get curious enough, I stop the exploration to keep the curiosity for the recording. With this tactic I want to make sure to ask questions on behalf of the audience who does not have any information about the guest when they listen to the conversation.

4?? They schedule the recording via Calendly , a tool that allows me to collect their picture and links for the show notes.

5?? A week before the recording, I send them a set of sample questions (that I usually don't ask!!) to make sure that we are aligned on the topic, can prepare so that we can then let go and follow the flow of the conversation.

6?? After editing the first 25 episodes myself, I am now outsourcing this task (#bestdecision). Gordon saves me about 3 hours each week and he won't cut me out (I used to overthink every minute of my own speaking time as I thought that I was taking "too much space"). If you are curious, I reflect on that question, I reflected on that topic in a blog post: ?Click here if you want to read the full story.?

7?? Before the release of the show, I send the guest my 1-page summary to review and adjust, if necessary.

8?? A day before, I send the e-mail newsletter with the direct link to the 1-page summary, Jenny adds the episode to the ?podcast map? and our ?homepage?. Early on the release day, I send the LinkedIn newsletter ?? with all the information and direct link to listen to the episode (look at me explaining this to YOU ??)

What a process... I am glad it has been working for over 220 episodes now ??.

I hope you found this newsletter insightful, especially if you have been thinking of starting a podcast yourself. If you do and have questions, please reach out. I'd love to support you in your journey!

See you next week ??
