Behind the scenes at our magazine

A PhotoED Magazine reader asked a question about how we mail out the magazine, which lead me to write a short BTS description of what goes on in making an independent magazine in Canada...

I'm SO fortunate to work with SO many photography passionate creative folks, directly and in the wider community. From the creative inspirations that come from our artists & writers, to our generous PATREON Patrons (Lori Ryerson / Ann Piché) and of course our advertisers Tamron Americas + Serif (Europe) Ltd Beau Photo Supplies Inc we never get tired of sharing the joy of exploring photography!

From the beginning point logistics like the local beverage that fuels us (Sparkplug Coffee Ltd.) to the folks that share our magazine on their retail shelves ( Issues Magazine Shop ) our small but mighty magazine truly celebrates photography stories in a brand new light.

I (personally) think best way to experience what we do is in print for an immersive experience - with no pop-up distractions. We aim to create that same mental health benefit that going to an art gallery has. (Facts + science HERE)

We work with artists and writers for months to craft their stories to be shared their way. We create professional, original content that celebrates work regardless of the 'level' a photographer is at, and we respect our readers through accessible language (NOT gear tech talk or art-speak).

We have editorial independence and integrity. We are not a pay-to-play publication.

My aim is to welcome and celebrate new conversations through photography. Not create or uphold barriers of exclusivity that our medium has held historically. Our work is not a charity or an 'institution' - nor are we funded by a big bank, so we have creative freedom to be honest, inclusive, and diverse naturally - not because of required quotas or corporate HR requirements.

The community partners we work with - we work with because their values align with ours. B3K Digital PPOC - Professional Photographers of Canada Front Row Insurance Brokers Inc. Toronto Image Works Downtown Camera Harcourt House Toronto Outdoor Art Fair

It's been my pleasure to work with toooo many incredible contributors to list, so I'll leave that for now, but as we wait for our next edition to roll off the press, I thought I'd take this moment to pause and say THANK YOU to those that have supported our vision!
