The Beginning of Things
A Biweekly Letter from Russell Briscoe

The Beginning of Things

You're reading the first newsletter I've ever written. I never thought I would sit down to write one. I never recall reading a newsletter, so I hope to find an audience that appreciates the medium more than I have. As with any true writing, writing anything is an equal part for you, the reader, and for me, the man exposed. So, I won't be offended if you stop here and never return.?

So why am I writing a newsletter?

Two reasons.

Number one. If I can help someone with some insight, quip, question, or just a little bit of tenderness that even briefly, even by a sliver, lightens their day, that is a good thing to do. That is about you.?

Secondly, and this one is about me, I need a place to organize my thoughts to keep a record of the ground I'm covering regarding writing, filming content, reading, research, and general wonderment. This newsletter will help me catalog what's constantly piling up around me.

I saw this quote a while back and always remembered it.

"Routine, in an intelligent man, is a sign of ambition ~ W.H. Auden.*

I'm still determining my intelligence and ambition, but I'm a star adherent to routine.

So, this will be the routine patterning for my newsletter.

It arrives to you "biweekly," for the understandably confused on the meaning of that word (I am among you), that means "twice per month." Funny language, English is.?

It will contain the following structure:

  1. One news item with my commentary on its philosophical connection or interpretation.
  2. YPYB Intersection: How to apply philosophy when facing one specific business question, pursuit, or problem, commonplace in corporate America.
  3. What I'm currently reading and commentary
  4. Updates on my YouTube channel, Substack, and podcasting
  5. Art accompaniment. "A real piece of art is a window into the transcendent, and you need that in your life ..."*

I will do my best to attribute and provide links to any referenced materials.

Thank you for reading, and do be in touch.?

Russ

Actually. Biweekly is both twice a week and twice a month. English is a funny language.

Russell Briscoe, How do you plan to blend philosophical concepts with practical business strategies in your newsletter?
