A Beginner's Guide to ChatGPT: My First Impressions of This AI Model

Have you heard of ChatGPT? Over the past two months, this AI technology has been making waves across social media and has become a hot topic of discussion. Dubbed "a stunning breakthrough" and "a glimpse into the future of AI," ChatGPT is not just another chatbot.

What is ChatGPT?

The name "ChatGPT" stands for "chatting" and "Generative Pretrained Transformer." This AI model is generative, meaning it can generate new text based on input and pretrained, as it has been trained on a large amount of data before use. The transformer algorithm used in ChatGPT is particularly well-suited for processing and generating text.

My Experience with ChatGPT

As someone who was intrigued by all the buzz around ChatGPT, I decided to try it out for myself. I was blown away by its capabilities and the results I was able to achieve. When I started using ChatGPT, I was impressed by its natural and human-like understanding and response to my requests. The quality of the generated text was far beyond what I expected from a machine.

ChatGPT is Much More Than a Chatbot

Don't be fooled by its name - ChatGPT is much more than a chatbot. Trained on massive amounts of text data from the internet, it can generate text, answer questions, translate text, summarize text, and more accurately and fluently. Here are some of the interesting things I tried with ChatGPT:

  • Explaining ChatGPT to a seven-year-old in 100 words
  • Summarizing a 1000-word article in five sentences
  • Translating an HBR article into Hindi (although with some inaccuracies)
  • Creating complex stories with characters and situations (my favorite use case!)
  • Having conversations on various topics like Netflix shows, movie similarities, sporting events, and more

Correct Prompting is the Key

In my experience, proper prompting is the key to getting the most out of ChatGPT. A precise and clear prompt will lead to better-quality responses. Correct grammar and spelling are also necessary for ChatGPT to understand the question, and providing context and additional information can also help. Poorly formatted input can result in incoherent responses.

Take ChatGPT's Responses with a Grain of Salt

Keep in mind that not all of ChatGPT's responses are accurate. This could be due to missing information, questions' ambiguities, or training data limitations. Therefore, it is essential to cross-check its responses with other sources to ensure accuracy.

Below is an example where it agreed that 10+2 was 13, not 12!

Trained on Data Only Until 2021

A significant limitation of ChatGPT is that it is trained on data only until 2021 and cannot be used for applications requiring up-to-date information.

Final Thoughts

ChatGPT is a remarkable technology that has made finding information and having natural conversations much easier. However, like any new technology, there are concerns and criticisms, including the ethics and fairness of using AI for decisions that affect people's lives and the risk of biases in AI language models. The future development and ethical use of ChatGPT remain to be seen, but its potential is endless.
