YouTube tutorial for this lesson:

If you are new to the 3D modeling world, you should first check out what Blender is.

After that, learn how to install it.

Before continuing to read the fourth part of the guide, read the first, second, third, and fourth parts.

Hello everyone! I am SaTales and today it’s time for a new Blender lesson.

Last time, I explained how to add and copy an object in Blender.

Today, I will introduce you to Edit Mode and the types of selections available there. So, let’s get started!

You can switch from Object Mode to Edit Mode by selecting 'Edit Mode' from this menu.

Or you can just press “TAB” to switch from object mode to edit mode and vice versa.

While we were in Object Mode, the cube didn’t look like this. However, now that we’re in Edit Mode, its appearance has changed.

In Object Mode, you can only move, rotate, or scale your object, add and apply modifiers, or change its material. But in Edit Mode, you can edit the object’s topology.

First, let’s learn what a cube is made of.

A cube consists of vertices, edges, and faces.

Let’s start with the vertex.

So, what is a vertex or vertices?

Vertices are represented by all those small dots you can see.

So, our cube has 8 vertices.

If you want to switch to vertex selection, you can do that by clicking here or simply pressing 1 on your keyboard (not the Numpad).

What is an edge?

An edge is a line that connects two vertices. This means that the cube has 12 edges.

If you want to switch to edge selection, you can do that by clicking here or simply by pressing 2 on your keyboard (not Numpad).

And face is the area between: three vertices - triangles, four vertices - quads or more vertices - n-gons with an edge on every side. That means that this cube has 6 faces.

If you want to switch to face selection, you can do that by clicking here or simply? by pressing 3 on your keyboard (not Numpad).

Perhaps you noticed how, in those examples, I was showing the cube as transparent (as if I could see through it). This is called an X-ray mode.

You can activate X-ray mode by clicking here or by simply pressing Alt + Z. You can turn it off the same way, either by clicking the button on the screen or using the keyboard shortcut.

You are already familiar with the Move, Rotate, and Scale tools, so I don’t need to explain them again. What’s different in Edit Mode is that instead of transforming the entire object, you can move, rotate, or scale parts of the cube.

For example, you can move vertices, scale faces, or rotate edges.

That’s all for today! Next time, you’ll learn about a new tool: Extrude. But until then, try experimenting with the tools you’re already familiar with in Edit Mode to get a better feel for them.

If you had fun learning with me, don’t forget to subscribe to my channel.

I recently started a Patreon with more exclusive content like 3D models, .blend files, behind-the-scenes videos, etc. You can also download a free Blender guide based on this lesson so feel free to check it out if you like text tutorials more. It is updated monthly.

I am also sharing a new free 3D model each week from this YT channel, this time I’m giving away a a free 3D pasta model from my Pasta tutorial.

There is something for both free and paid members, so don’t forget to check the
