Begin Again, An Earth Day Message from the Beaches of Santa Barbara

This Earth Day, keep in mind that every day is an opportunity to enjoy and protect the beauty of Mother Earth. While uncertainty, doom and gloom are often front of mind with the environmental content we consume - for the moment, let's explore a simple but powerful message that can remind us daily of the opportunity to take action, one small step and one day at a time.

This message was delivered to me not in a bottle but a cup, along the beaches of Santa Barbara where the Earth Day movement began. My wife and I married on the pristine sands of East Beach where the Santa Barbara oil spill ravaged the California coast from Goleta to Ventura. Every Sunday the art show along these beaches comes to life and that's when the Begin Again message came to us. An artist named James makes beautiful hand made clay pieces through which he shares his journey and the expression that to this day is magnetized on our fridge. It's helped us along the way as James had hoped and now I pass it along to you!

It reads:

"Begin Again"

Begin Again is an expression that seems to have given me great encouragement. It has a way of replacing regrets, fears, worries, and problems, with hopes of starting over ... a second chance. It opens the door for an opportunity to make things better and easier for me and for everyone around me. It has been a blessing every day that I have read it, so I thought I would pass it on to others. I encourage you to read this every morning and watch your life, as well as those special people in your life change, for the better. Blessings!!! Enjoy !! - James

We traded some cash for these gems from James: two cups (below) and the fridge magnet that holds up the Begin Again message (above).

How can this relate to Earth Day and how can it help?

Sadly, we broke the two special cups from James. Rather than get upset, what did Kristin and I do? We let the cups Begin Again! We glued them back together making them small pots for a few indoor plants! These cups and the plants that now clean the air in our home, remind us that every day is an opportunity to Begin Again.

So, when you begin the day, let yourself be reminded that it's a great opportunity for us to all Begin Again. It's never too late. Every day is a second chance.
