Before You Build That Next Big Job
Rigging can teach us a great deal about safety planning. My favorite is the cliche, "A Chain is only as good as its weakest link".
Your project may have plans for 100% PPE, Fall protection, Stretch and flex, PTP sessions at 7:00 am and still have a "weak link" .
Good questions to ask yourself before you are dealing with a major accident.
1) Did you have a qualified safety professional in each procurement meeting discussing key questions about cranes and housekeeping? 2) Approximately 3 weeks before a contractor is allowed on site did you have a "Kick off" safety meeting specific to your 20 story building? 3) Has someone followed up on the safety items the subcontractors DID NOT have ready?
Planning for a safe project starts the day the engineered drawings are stamped and is finished when your last employee is transferred to another project. Have a complete plan without a "weak link" and you will be amazed at the overall safety and of the project.
Typically the overall Severity rate may drop and of course that is a WIN-WIN.
