Since none of us worked through the Spanish Flu pandemic, I think I’m safe in saying that 2020 was an unprecedented year. I expect we’re all very happy to jump into a new year with new goals and initiatives. Before you firmly and finally relegate the past year to history, I encourage you to take a moment to look back and document your 2020 accomplishments.
Here’s what to include:
- Document your wins, of course. Also include all the other things you did to move the business forward: where you made money, saved money, or improved a process.
- Detail how you made it happen - the pivots, team building, and changes in strategy. Include what you’re most proud of, your biggest challenge and how you overcame it.
- Quantify as much as possible and put things in context.
Doing this now means that you’ll be prepared when you need to update your resume, negotiate your next promotion, or present to the Board. This exercise also highlights how you need to position yourself to prepare for your next career step.
It’s important to do this now, while your memory is fresh. In your zeal to get off to a great start in 2021 it’s all too easy to forget the things you did last year to position yourself for this year’s success.
If you’d like a template with some examples to help you get started, just reply in the comments or send me an email. No obligation. I’ll shoot you a doc we use for interview prep and outplacement with senior-level candidates.
Here’s to a fantastic 2021 for us all!
