Before you do or say anything, think!

The brain is a vastly complex landscape and I do respect and value the brain but it's simple in one way: it can't do two things at the same time. Therefore, stop thinking about what you could have been doing or could have done. When you do something, do it 100%. When you are watching TV while you are thinking about the gym, you're doing two things at once. Stop. Think. Do. Stop. always in that order because multitasking is good but only when it is an utmost necessity.
If you want to learn how to start thinking before acting, then the first step is to learn how to stop. . Have a moment of silence. Don't move. Make it last at least 2 seconds. This is not meditation, nor a superpower. Just stop. Then you start to think. Try not to think about 100 things, but mostly about the thing that matters most in this moment. "What am I doing? What is my goal? Is there anything pressing and important about this? Is it time for me to relax? What is the time? What do I need?"
Only after you have correctly performed step one and two, you get into action. Remember what I wrote above - you make a decision, and put your full attention to it. Decided to enjoy a cup of tea? Make tea, drink, enjoy. Don't occupy yourself with worries. Those things are not a part of drinking tea, right?
Step 1 is non-existent when you physically stop moving but immediately start thinking.
Step 2 is not working when you start thinking while getting into action.
Step 3 is going wrong when you're in action, but feel (vaguely) that something is not okay.
Keep these three steps strictly separated from each other. You may find that you're going to make a decision that you didn't anticipate before. It could very well be that you will experience much more fun in what you do. Things that mean nothing to you are a waste of time. If you don't like to go to the gym, don't go. Actively decide to do so: stop saying to yourself that you should go when you are not going to. A decision is not a contract. You can ask yourself if you would like to go, later. Therefore, you stop and think before you act. Stopping = being in this moment. Thinking = getting a clear picture of what's going on.
It may take a while before you get this into your system. You'll get better at it every time you do it. It doesn't matter if this technique appeals to you or not. It has nothing to do with personal style. You're not helping yourself if you want to get into action and proceed to consider your blood group, religion, flaws, social media account, IQ, or physical scale of attractiveness, feedback from friends, guilt-soaked memories, but's and always's, etc. Genuinely! It's the same for you and me. We both have brains. Your brain doesn't care that you are messy and lazy.
You might as well want to start by identifying your life values, goals and priorities e.g. my No. 1 priority on Sunday is to sleep till late and just relax without getting any screen time, because I work at an office, in front of your computer 6 days a week, but once you have them written down and I am an advocate of writing down for improving your life perhaps you always have a reference of what you should do when you can't decide. Therefore, if your priority is to get fit, you will look at that and know you shouldn't be watching so much TV, but if your priority is to just relax, you know it's couch time.
The next thing you want to do is schedule your priorities in your week. This is taking you a step further - look at your goal and try to fit it in your weekly schedule. Then, you will not only feel that you are doing the right thing all the time and lose any doubts but feel even more accomplished, fulfilled and happy life.
