Before you DIY Your Website – Learn from My Mistake

Before you DIY Your Website – Learn from My Mistake

Are you considering building or rebuilding your own website?

Let me share a story with you that might resonate.

For a while, I had been wanting to buy a drone, so I could get more interesting videos for my travel blog.

… But I kept putting it off thinking it was difficult to fly.

I find it hard to reverse park using my car camera, so I figured I wouldn’t be able to navigate something that flies in different directions and at different altitudes all the while looking at the screen on my phone.

But then a friend bought a new drone.

I was with her when she took her first flight and it didn’t seem too difficult, so I decided to get one too.

As soon as I got home, I unpacked it, charged it, named it and was ready to fly.

I rushed down to the beach and launched Snoopy.

Quickly gaining confidence, I flew over the ocean carefully watching Snoopy do its thing.

Then I looked down at my phone and I saw everything the drone was seeing. It was spectacular!

I looked back up to see where Snoopy was and I couldn’t see it. It had disappeared!!

I started to panic – how do I know which way it’s flying if I can’t see it?

Suddenly my phone started flashing “LOW BATTERY - RETURN TO HOME!!!”.

I stood there for a while thinking it was coming back to its launch spot, but looking at my phone I could see Snoopy was flying higher up.

Pressing different controls, hoping to get it lower to the ground, nothing seemed to be happening.

In that moment, I stood there feeling like such a dummy … why didn’t I read the instructions before flying, why did I assume it would just come home … why why why?

In my mind I said goodbye to Snoopy, thinking I would never see it again.

Then suddenly I hear a buzzing above my head and there is Snoopy coming home!

I was so relieved!

But it got me thinking, how many times do we rush into doing something we know nothing about?

We see someone else doing it seemingly effortlessly, and we think, "I can do that too!" But the truth is, without the right knowledge and expertise, things can go wrong really quickly.

Had Snoopy not come home, I would have lost a $500 toy.

This is what Anita from Jindabyne Getaways said about her experience:

I was referred to Ivana by a friend, who mentioned she was great at creating websites for small business.

Ivana had great ideas and was helpful in the process of building our website including the colours, layout, navigation and extra functionality. Her communication was excellent as was her knowledge of website design.

I didn’t really have a vision for our website and left the design and creativity up to Ivana and the end result is amazing!

I built a website years ago when pages were static and when the web builder got cocky he pulled the plug on smaller sized clients leaving me without a contact me page that actually worked. While I don’t think website have the same gravitis as they did years ago, I think they’re probably still a necessary evil, and many agencies use them as a surrogate BDM. I feel the need to rebuild a website based on a name change for my business, but am only looking for an interactive landing page that is Uber simple and cheap to ettablish and maintain. I’m still paying for my old website to be hosted even though it is so outdated… but I’m assuming any website is probably better than none.
