Before You Buy A.I. Software

Before You Buy A.I. Software

Before you spend a dollar on AI.

Most of the A.I. world is backwards.

Every piece of news is about this new great tool that can do something amazing.

You get super excited and buy the tool.

Then you have to think about how you’ll implement the tool in your business.

Don’t do this.

You’ll only end up wasting time and money.

Find a Problem You Need to Solve

Before you decide to buy a new tool, learn a new technique or hire a new employee you have to follow the same process.

What is the problem you want solved?

This little question will ensure that you focus on using tools to improve processes that are already a part of your business rather than adding new tasks to your workload.

While AI videos are fun to look at, if you’re not already using video in your business, they are a waste of your time.

Move the Needle

Rather than looking for something fun and cool, start with tasks that really matter.

What do you spend a lot of your week doing?

We want to find tasks that take up at least on hour per day.

If we can recover all or even half of that hour, you will get back enough time that you will notice.

If I can give you one extra ten-minute break per day, you probably won’t notice.

If I can let you leave work thirty minutes every day, you will really feel a difference in your quality of life.

This is why we want to start with tasks that are boring and repetitive.

This is where AI tools can shine and you’ll notice the biggest gains in freedom.

Clearly Define Your Goal

When I assign a task to ChatGPT, I need to know what the task is and how to know if the task is completed.

A video script isn’t complete until it’s on my teleprompter and ready to read.

If ChatGPT can write the rough draft, but I need to edit and finalize it, that’s a partial win.

It saves me some time.

If i can write the script from start to finish and require no editing or rewrites?

That’s going to give me back a lot more of my time.

Measure of Success

Beyond accomplishing a task, we need to measure how well the task was completed.

Anyone can post one of my clips to social media.

There are incremental measures of success, such as choosing the right clip and putting the correct description and links below the video.

But there is also the larger measure of success - how many people watched and responded to the video.

If ChatGPT is writing my video script, the first waypoint is completing the script and the second is the script actually being good.

This is how we decide if we are going to keep a tool or look for an alternative solution.

The Right Way to Choose Your Tools

Let’s bring it all together.

Don’t buy a tool and then look for a problem that it can solve.

Instead, look for areas where you want to get more time back.

Then find a tool that can help you to accomplish that task faster.

Once you’ve selected a tool, measure it against a clear standard.

How much time does it save you and what is the quality of its work?

When you follow this simple process, you’ll save a lot of money and stop filling your hard drive with fun but useless tools.

Hi that's great advise as you put it. Thanks. It would be better if you gave examples of what ChatGPT, Anthropic and Gemini can do since if you want to solve a specific concern with the use of AI, it would be good to know which of those main ones actually do xyzzy. Other AI software that are specific to specific tasks like writing a book for for other types of writing are usually named with that work in it. You might say this would be too exhaustive to write, however with your expertise I'm sure you can get do an AI search for general business functions, etc. When I decided to make my $20/monthly subscription I put in a prompt to answer my question if it could formulate results specifically for what I wanted to do and I was surprised the out was yes with specifics of how it would do it and what it would need from me to do it. That was great I thought, but I still would like to know which one would do it the best with the least effort of my input and finally which one would be the less intrusive of my privacy. I still have to make all that happen since my skills are't yet proficient to write these mini programs and insert API's.
