Beethoven 250 Violin Sonata no 1

Beethoven 250 Violin Sonata no 1

The Sonata no 1 for piano and violin dates from 1798 and is dedicated to Antoni Salieri who, in case you believe everything you saw in the film “Amadeus,” was no mean composer himself. At the time, Beethoven was studying with Haydn who was considered the god of music though he, himself, like Bach before him, put God at the centre of his work. In all probability, he was the last composer to do this, but more of this later.

Notice the continuous dialogue between the two instruments and the surprising twists and turns as the musical ideas pass from one voice to the other. Here is an historic recording of two of the greatest players of the 20th century. Most unusually, both Arthur Grumiaux and Clara Haskil were accomplished players of both the violin and the piano.

Yeah, Salieri gets a tough ride in that film. His estate should sue.
