BEETHOVEN 250
I wonder if you saw Philip Seymour Hoffman in the 2012 film, “A Late Quartet”? It was one of his last films and is magnificent. I think I have seen it seven times. It tells the story of a string quartet and the challenges, both emotional and physical, faced by the four musicians. It is well worth seeing, not least because the film is constructed around one of the most remarkable pieces of music ever written, Beethoven’s Opus 131. On hearing it, the young Franz Schubert (When was he never young? Dead at 31) wrote, “After this, what is left to write?”
Opus 131 is difficult listening even now but really worth the effort. Something for the weekend, perhaps? This recording also has the score which you can follow and see how the music is constructed.
