“The Beek vs. Nettie-Poo”
Do you remember the movie Varsity Blues?
Varsity Blues is James Van Der Beek’s only decent (loose interpretation) movie. Not sure why this guy had such a cult following?
Anyway, “The Beek” (he’s literally been called this) is the 2nd string quarterback. He is on the team and to most, appears to not have any talent or skill. Basically, he holds the clipboard for the star.
But then fate happens, and the Star gets injured. “The Beek” steps in and throws a bomb with absolute precision to win the game like he’s freaking Joe Montana.
The coach, the players, the fans in the stands, and his parents were in shock. They didn’t know he had that in him. The reason is that he didn’t like the whole fanfare. He didn’t want to be a local celebrity. He didn’t feel he should be worshiped for just playing a game that he loves to play.
So, he sat dormant throughout high-school until that pinnacle moment. He was called to action & he reluctantly answered. He was instantly transformed into the hero he was meant to be.
Sometimes people are heroes but they’re reluctant to step into the light. Deep down inside, they know that can be transforming. And once you transform, you can never go back to your comfortable place of anonymity.
That can be scary.
I’ll probably get in trouble for writing about this but it’s a story that must be told. She should get the recognition that all reluctant heroes deserve.
My wife, in a way, is “The Beek”, or rather his character from Varsity Blues. Not just because she also has a cool nickname, Nettie-Pooh (I might be the only one that adds the “pooh”)
She has superior talents and skills in many areas. But she likes to stay hidden in the background. She doesn’t want the attention. Compliments embarrass her.
But she’s been progressing on that 1% path for years without saying a. word and the motherlode has finally been broken.
I always brag about her style & decorating skills. When it comes to fashion, interior design, staging, and anything on that fringe…she’s got a natural talent. I know lots of women think they have this, but trust me, Annette is on a level all her own. This has never been a secret.
But her Pinnacle “Varsity Blues” moment came recently through work. She’s been with the same credit union for years. She’s done pretty much every job there you can think of. She should have progressed up that corporate ladder long ago.
But she shies away from the limelight. One has to apply for promotions. Sell themselves to advance. Even when encouraged to do so, she doesn’t. She’s been perfectly content to be the backup quarterback.
But she’s been called to action. From my point of view, they have created a position for her. One with more responsibility that requires the skills and attention to detail that Annette thought she had kept under the radar all these years.
And she’s throwing bombs down the field.
Her transformation has been years in the making. I’m not sure what’s inspired her but the compounding effect of her 1% daily improvement is spilling out everywhere.
“…her cup runneth over!”
The 1% Journey is not about improving one thing…it’s improving all 4 pillars of life: Mind, Body, Relationships, & Business.
Since all 4 are interdependent, it’s hard to say which pillar stimulate the others. But from my observation she’s hitting mark on all 4 pillars.
With regard to business, well I have already bragged about how she reluctantly Hero’d up at work.
With mind, she analyzes things in a different way. She’s not tied to pre-conceived and generationally, cemented norms. Her thoughts are her own and she’s confident in her beliefs.
The Relationships Pillar is harder to judge because she’s always been so giving of herself, especially when somebody is in need, so there really is no room for improvement. But I see big advancements here in that she’s not afraid of new relationships where before she has always been part of a tight circle.
That brings us down to body. She’s been steadily improving. She probably thinks I don’t notice & that’s my fault. As much as she doesn’t like getting compliments, I’m horrible at giving them. But trust me, I notice.
I’ve always been infatuated with her, but she keeps leveling up. I pay homage to the creators of Yoga Pants. I’ve always watched her walk out of the room, “butt” now I really can’t stop staring ????. She’s caught me a couple of times. I just pretend I was staring out in deep thought ??
The point is, she looks amazing. No, that’s not descriptive enough. She’s hot ??and keeps getting hotter ?? ?? ?? ??.
Her 1% efforts have compounded across all pillars of life. I couldn’t be more amazed and prouder of how far she’s come and continues to go—1% life.
Mind. Relationships. Body. Business.
Total transformation.
We should all find our inner hero.
