On Becoming A Leader

On Becoming A Leader

What better way to discover your leadership values and hone your leadership skills than to actively participate in the process of creating a leadership book with another 260K aspiring leaders around the world? That is right. Together we are going to create a book on how to become a great leader.

In the world we are in today, everyone is expected to be a leader. Yet many, including myself, have struggled throughout our careers to really internalize and appreciate what leadership really means. The more people I talk to, the more I realize that the struggle was not unique to me, but true for everyone who aspires to be a leader.

Most companies and business schools have picked up the challenge of leadership development. However, investment in leadership development has not always produced the expected results. Part of the challenge is that we are all unique and different. As a result, each one of us will have to figure out our own personal expression of leadership. In addition, we also recognize that leadership is a journey not a destination. Everyone’s learning path will be different.

The intent of the book is to share reflections on leadership starting by asking the question of “why do you want to be leader?” Reflection on the “why” can help you discover your own leadership values and purposes before you think about how and what you need to do to hone your specific leadership skills. I am planning to survey the 260K LinkedIn readers of my weekly leadership blog on what leadership means to them and the challenges they face on their leadership journey. I am also planning to interview at least 100 leaders or aspiring leaders.

More importantly, I would like to directly hear from you. Your perspective and how you tell the leadership story can make all the difference. As such, I will try my best to bring you along on this journey by sharing selected leadership stories on a dedicated website which will go live next week, but more importantly sharing things I am learning about the wonderful leaders I meet, the survey results, the leadership insights I gain through the process, and things I learn about book writing. I am writing the book together with an amazing community of fellow writers with Creator Institute founded by Professor Eric Koester at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. The working title of the book is “On Becoming a Leader” with a goal of publishing it in 2Q2023.

I look forward to the day when we can all be proud of the book from this community of aspiring leaders that can potentially help many others in becoming leaders for the betterment of the world! However, success of the project is dependent on your active participation and I know I can count on your support by actively participating in the survey and sharing your leadership story.

I am beyond excited for this to go to print. I can't wait to read about others' journies, challenges & successes. Being a leader, I have found, means so many different things to employees & managers. Will be interesting to see all the perspectives & have my mind opened to opportunities for growth that I may have not thought of myself! Best of luck on your endeavor!

I can share something that is more personal to me. My first mentor and someone i really look up to as a leader used to be a tank commander in the US Army and he gave me my first lesson on how he views great leadership: " always take the least amount of credit and shoulder the greatest amount of blame for your team, and they will follow you".

My vision to leadership, it is a management ruled up by the ethics, moral, protection and participation. The right leaders who are able to direct the work environment to achieve group success rather than individual one.?
