BECOMING A LEADER

Naturally, the desire to lead is inherent in all of us. We assume it’s an opportunity to become the boss, issuing instructions and being served by others.?

But, that will not be leadership. The true meaning of leadership is exemplified in service - service in the interest of all and to advance a communal goal. Even more important, leadership is not necessarily being the “boss”. It is about understanding your assignment and always putting in your best for outstanding outcomes.

And several books, articles, and write-ups exist with a prescriptive list of things to do to live up to this type of leadership themed “servant leadership”.?

Therefore, my goal is not to reproduce any list of qualities or actions required of those with the desire to become leaders.

It is true that some are born leaders. However, others have also learnt and have perfected the art of leadership. And in my experience, these three things are imperative:

1. Without respect for TIME, you can't become a leader. To be a leader, you must be extremely time-conscious and an unwavering apostle of time. Everything happens at a particular time and your awareness and respect for time will help you lead in the right direction.?
2. You must be INNOVATIVE and INTUITIVE. Like it or not, many look up to leaders for direction and new ideas. The idea of teamwork doesn’t mean the leader shouldn’t be a thinker and an innovator. Intuitively, you must also be right about the decisions you make for the team and always be able to rally support.?
3. You must have SERVED before. Yes, leadership is about service meaning you must have the experience of a diligent and loyal follower. It would be best if you came to the job with the experience - good, bad or ugly of having served others. This experience and appreciation are the most relevant to ensuring you nip the tendencies of the arrogance of power.?

So this week, remember you can become a leader too. Whether by plan or circumstances, you must be ready for leadership by building and practicing the right mindset, character, and appeal.?
