When it comes to Public Speaking or Motivational Speaking, many might think that knowing how to speak is one of the primordial characteristics to define a good motivational speaker. But i guess 'many' had the wrong perception towards Public Speaking for decades, there is actually a lot more than that. I have been asked several times on Live Radios, during Podcasts, on Tv-shows or Newspapers concerning the secret behind a great Public Speaker.
1. Knowledge (Talk Sense)
The KNOWLEDGE you wish to convey to your AUDIENCE is of tremendous importance in making sure you seize their ATTENTION. The more knowledgeable you are, the more confident you will be of your abilities and this will certainly reduce your FEAR OF STAGE. The content you are actually presenting to your audience has always been the major issue. Sometimes it's too boring, too long, too short, too much explanation or no-examples provided etc... The content being conveyed should match the audience-type perfectly as this will determine whether the audience will feel attracted to your speech or not. Some age-groups might require more in-depth explanations to understand what youngsters would normally understand within few words.
2. Self-Confidence (Know Your Topic)
The more confident you are about your abilities and knowledge, the less will be your STAGE FRIGHT and your PERFORMANCE ANXIETY. Your level of confidence will enhance the body language you will be conveying to your audience. This will indirectly retain the attention of your public. Self-confidence will make you sound more natural and convey the image of an experienced Motivational Speaker and not an Apprentice.
Self-confidence will surely create self-satisfaction, making you feel HAPPY speaking on stage and therefore push you more into the latter. This will definitely get you more motivated towards learning how to become better on stage and get you to practice more and eventually improve yourself.
3. Practice (Repeat & Improve)
Practice makes perfect. Practicing in front of your mirror or in your bedroom at night can easily enhance the way you perform on stage. The best approach would be to actually make a video recording of yourself performing and assessing it afterwards to improve yourself. If you feel interested listening to your own speeches then most probably there are others out there who will feel the same way.
Another great method would be to watch TED TALKS of famous public speakers which is available on YouTube. This can tremendously impact the way you actually speak on a stage and the way you connect with your audience. The can surely learn from the great speakers on how to build rapport with the audience and connect easier with them.
4. Body Language (Stand Properly)
Body Language has always been a crucial point which many Speakers especially apprentice don't really take into consideration. Body Language is of tremendous importance in conveying your CONFIDENCE to your audience as well as get them to pay attention. EYE-CONTACT with the audience is extremely important but too much might make some people feel awkward and therefore looking at different locations in the crowd is crucial if done within a specific time-frame. Many tend to walk on stage especially when the stage is very big to be able to ensure eye contact with the entire audience. But if the stage is too small, you might surely look like a fool walking on a box.
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION which comprises of 93% of your daily communication is also a point to consider. Your VOICE-TONALITY will surely influence your audience. Talking with a single voice tone will certainly make your audience to fall asleep, remember this is not the objective here, the goal is to get people to listen and not fall into trance mode. Raising your pitch on certain words or when giving examples can help a lot in highlighting the things you wish the audience to pay more attention to.
