Becoming a Champion of Wellbeing in the Workplace

Hello and a warm welcome back to all of you!?

I want to dive into an inspiring conversation I had with Jen Fisher, Chief Wellbeing Officer at Deloitte, on my?Newsweek interview show ,?Better. Jen's insights into cultivating a culture of wellbeing at one of the world's leading professional services firms are fantastic examples of a healthy work environment. I can attest to this on a personal level, as I’ve been a regular speaker for Deloitte’s CORE leadership program since 2013. It’s a great program which assists military veterans transitioning back into the civilian workforce, and you can read more about it in this piece I wrote for HBR.?

Here are three standout moments from our discussion that could change how you think about wellbeing in the workplace:

From Personal Burnout to Chief Wellbeing Officer

Jen's journey to becoming Deloitte's first Chief Wellbeing Officer began with her own battle with burnout. Her personal experience underscores the often overlooked aspect of wellbeing in high-performing environments. Jen's story is a powerful reminder of the strength in vulnerability and the importance of addressing wellbeing head-on in our professional lives.

The Power of Collective Disconnect

Imagine an organization where everyone - from interns to the CEO - takes time off together, disconnecting completely from work. That's the reality at Deloitte, through their innovative collective disconnect days. These scheduled breaks are a testament to the firm's commitment to employee wellbeing and offer a model for other organizations to consider.

Wellbeing, DEI, and Purpose: Interconnected and Indispensable

Jen Fisher emphasizes the intrinsic link between wellbeing, diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and organizational purpose. Deloitte's future-focused approach considers how wellbeing intersects with broader societal goals, such as human sustainability. This holistic perspective invites us to think about wellbeing not just as individual health, but as a crucial component of a just and sustainable society.

These initiatives at Deloitte highlight the evolving understanding of what it means to create a truly supportive and inclusive workplace. As we strive for success in our professional and personal lives, let's remember the importance of wellbeing as the foundation of all we do.

For those looking to delve deeper into cultivating strong relationships and maximizing wellbeing in your organizations, I highly recommend her book,?Work Better Together . ?

I love this, thanks for sharing your work. It's amazing how we often think of success and well-being as opposite ends of the spectrum; we can EITHER have one of the other. But I agree, they are intrinsically linked! What do you think the first steps are to shifting an organization from a culture of burnout being the norm to something more life giving and sustainable?

Dorie Clark I love that we are having these conversations in the open. Corporate culture is expecting a fast if not immediate turnaround on any raised issue. As Jen Fisher ?? says it took us some time and work to get here, so it will take some time and work to change it. Let’s make it happen!
