Many full-time accountants aspire to become part-time CFOs and FP&As. But they are challenged to be seen as a trusted advisor. Here's how I made the leap more than a decade ago.
1?? It's not about smarts, it's about trust
When I first took the leap into this work, I thought my objective was to bring my experience and book smarts. I quickly discovered that I was wrong. The goal isn't to prove intelligence. The goal is to give business owners confidence that we can take them where they want to go.
2?? It's not just about vision, it's about execution
Lots of consultants can talk a big game. But growing a business isn't dependent on what a consultant has already done. Growing a company has to do with an advisor's ability to help business partners execute.
3?? It's not just about finance, it's about communication
The bare minimum of an effective Fractional CFO or FP&A advisor is to drive the business from the numbers. Anyone who can't do that should be shown the door.
But the most impactful financial business partners are those who are effective communicators with deep emotional intelligence. They're the once who can serve as financial advisors and counselors.
4?? Sometimes success means ending the relationship
Just as therapists help their patients resolve personal challenges, business advisors help their clients resolve management challenges.
Some CFOs and FP&As believe the sustainability of their business model means staying engaged for years. Others acknowledge when they and leadership are ready to move on.
