Become the weakest link in the chain
“If you run the 100 meter dash with people that can’t run as fast as you, yes you will win. But if you run with people much faster than you, you might come in last every single time but your time will be better.” — Quentin Tarantino
It is easy to think you are doing a lot and winning if you are much better than the people around you because you are doing much more than they are. And it is easy to think we are doing our best if we are comfortable in our environment.
I have found myself in groups where I was the one bringing the most to the table, and if I am being honest, I did love the feeling that came with knowing that to the entire group I was indispensable. Being asked questions, people looking up to you and having a solution for almost every problem does tend to make one puffed up.
Maybe you can relate with that.
If you do relate to that then you will also have realised, just the same way as I did, that in those type of situations you learnt little to almost nothing. You may have been the one that everybody looked to for answers and solutions but you are also the one that learns the least.
And that is a terrible position to be in for someone who wants to grow and wants to achieve huge goals.
Being the strongest or most important person in a group may feel good and may seem like you are where you need to be, but what you want to be is ‘the weakest link in the chain’. For someone longing for growth, that is exactly who you need to be.
If you are the one that is slowing everyone down, the one that knows the least, then being surrounded by those other strong people will make you dig deep and you will be the one that grows the most.
You may never catch up to the others and you will struggle, but you will grow into the best version of yourself.
Your performance will be better, your strategies will be more effective, your intelligence will be higher and you will level up in life.
Just like some wise guy said:
“Don’t be the smartest person in the room. If you’re the smartest person in the room then you are in the wrong room. ”
That is true, when you are the smartest person in the room then you are the one that has to correct others, you are the one that will find flaws in other people’s work and you are the one that is incapable of learning because you are the pinnacle of intelligence in your room.
People become average and fail not when they’re pushing themselves and breaking their own boundaries to be better, but when they sit back comfortably and relax.
That is why I believe that perhaps the smartest thing a smart person can do is put themselves in a room where they are the weakest link in the chain.
