Become a Project SEAL!
Tiago Mateus
Senior Project Manager (PMP, PgMP) at Volkswagen FS Porto | Author of the book "Project Your Life"
Any effort to achieve success will only work if you have a good foundation to begin with. Do you know the quote “You are what you eat”? You can also apply it to the other pillars of this foundation: sleep, activities and learning. Thus, you are what you eat, what (how) you sleep, what you activate (in yourself) and what you learn. I call these four pillars of body and mind the SEAL:
? Sleep well and relax frequently
? Eat and drink wisely and healthily
? Activate your body and mind
? Learn to develop yourself
It is crucial that you start by mastering each of these four pillars, since an unhealthy and unbalanced life is unlikely to give you the levels of energy and focus required to bring about success in whatever life projects you choose to pursue.
There’s a reason why I chose the acronym SEAL for this part of the GROW POSITIVE model: it’s an analogy with the Navy SEALs, the United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land teams, which are the U.S. Navy's primary special operations force. Like the Navy SEALs, you too will need to develop commitment, discipline and resilience to achieve your mission.
In a way, becoming a Project SEAL is like becoming a professional athlete. You need to take care of the different aspects that can influence your performance to increase your chances of success. The word “athlete” comes from the ancient Greek word meaning “one who competes for a prize”. You are also competing for a prize: the prize of improving your life.
The well-known footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is a good example of what SEAL is about. In the documentary "Ronaldo" from 2015, which provides a close look at his life, we can see that he takes the foundation of SEAL seriously. At home, he reserves some time for himself, to relax and have enough sleep so that he can recover for the next day’s challenge. He takes care of what he eats and does not drink alcohol. He activates his body by doing push-ups and swimming. He also has several coaches to help in his continual development.
Summary and practical tip:
At first sight, it might feel uncomfortable, perhaps even dauting, to become a project SEAL. This happens in every situation that pushes you out of your comfort zone. However, after you have made the painful journey from a mindset of doing the easy thing to a mindset of doing the right thing, the result will be so great that you will be happy you had the courage to embrace this change. After three weeks of “training” to consolidate the habit change, you will start to notice that waking up every morning never felt so good. You will feel rested, energized and motivated to take on the day’s challenges. With this, you will improve your performance and increase your chances of being successful in your life projects.
Practical tip: Include the following activities in your routine to become a Project SEAL.
