Become a Project SEAL! Step 4: Learn how to develop yourself

Learning - Mastering the ultimate skill

Imagine dedicating just 15 minutes a day to reading: in one year, you could complete 24 books.

Imagine if a genie appeared, ready to grant you the mastery of just one skill. What would you choose? What if you could pick a skill that opens the door to acquiring more skills - like asking for infinite wishes in one? That skill is “learning how to learn.” Master this, and you'll empower yourself to quickly adapt, innovate, and expand your abilities.

In project management, each endeavor is unique, requiring you to learn new tools and approaches. Personal projects - those for “Myself,” “Family & Friends,” and “Business”- require even broader skill sets. When I began writing "Project Your Life" book, I had to learn how to build an online community, manage a blog, and market my ideas effectively. Each skill added to my toolkit made the journey richer and prepared me better for future projects.

Learning can be a daily practice. Imagine dedicating just 15 minutes a day to reading: in one year, you could complete 24 books. And who could you become after absorbing the insights of 24 books?

Embracing Lifelong Learning

Every challenge should be seen as a chance to upgrade yourself.

To truly grow through life projects, every challenge should be seen as a chance to upgrade yourself. Here are some valuable learning opportunities that will present themselves frequently:

  • Change Behaviors: Replace unproductive habits with positive ones. As Zig Ziglar said, “The fastest way to success is to replace bad habits with good habits.”
  • Reading to Retain: To fully absorb a book’s insights, read it, study it, and apply its lessons. Practice makes perfect.
  • Building New Skills: Every lifeproject may demand new skills, from technical know-how to creative problem-solving, to enhance project outcomes.
  • Reflecting Daily: Keep a journal to capture daily lessons. Reflecting on both successes and setbacks can yield invaluable insights.

Life Lessons - Learning from daily experiences

Your daily retrospective should consider 3 positives and 1 negative lessons.

This is a technique used in project management, where professional project managers will review at the beginning of the project the lessons learned from similar projects done in the past, to avoid making the same mistakes. In each new project they will collect lessons learned throughout and archive them so that they can be reviewed later for other projects. As a life project manager, your retrospective analysis should also consider the positives and negatives of the day in the following way:

  • Write 3 positive lessons of the day by answering the questions: What went well today?
  • Write the negative lesson of the day by answering the questions: What went wrong? Why did it happen like that? How can I do better next time?
  • Every week and month, review your lessons.
  • At the end of the life project, save your most important lessons as part of your life lessons. The Life project lessons to remember could be the Top 3 positive and negative lessons of that life project.

Summary and practical tip:

Mastering the skill of “learning how to learn” is like unlocking a gateway to limitless growth. By making learning an intentional daily practice - even dedicating just 15 minutes to reading - you can open yourself to a world of new skills, insights, and personal transformations. Each project, whether personal or professional, becomes an opportunity to enrich your abilities, turning challenges into stepping stones. Integrating reflective practices, like daily journaling and reviewing lessons, enhances this journey, empowering you to evolve through every experience.

Practical Tip: Start a simple learning routine by choosing one skill, book, or topic that sparks your curiosity, and commit to learning about it for just 15 minutes each day.
