Become a Project SEAL! Step 2: Eat and drink wisely and healthily

The racing horse eating junk food and drinking too much alcohol

you are your best investment, and therefore you need to treat yourself well, by eating and drinking wisely and healthily

One day, while listening to a podcast, I came across a very interesting scenario that got me thinking. Imagine that you were in the horse racing business and that you invested in a racehorse. How would you treat that horse? What food and drink would you give to it? Would you take good care of it? I believe so. If nothing else, you would at least want to maximize your investment. Now think about how much you value yourself. What treatment do you deserve? Eating junk food and drinking too much alcohol and coffee? Would you give that to the racehorse? I would not. Moral of the story: you are your best investment, and therefore you need to treat yourself well, by eating and drinking wisely and healthily.

Project Lifers take care of their eating habits because they understand that this is a vital basis for being successful in their personal, family and professional projects.

It's easy to distinguish junk food from healthy food

deep inside, we can all distinguish junk food from healthy food.

When it comes to eating healthily, there is so much information available today that I will abstain from giving my own understanding of the topic. I believe that, deep inside, we can all distinguish junk food from healthy food. We also understand that if we want to use our brain at its maximum potential, we will need to provide it with the best possible fuel.

Which is the best time for eating?

taking the last meal of the day 2–3 hours before going to bed.

What you might not be so clear on is the best time for eating. I noticed an improvement in myself when I started taking my last meal of the day 2–3 hours before going to bed instead of eating late or snacking after dinner while sitting on the couch watching television.

Another improvement I felt was the easing of the digestion process that resulted from taking breakfast as late as possible. What adjustments to your eating habits might be beneficial to you?

Which drinking habits should I take?

drink 2–3 litres of water a day.

It is also important to drink the recommended daily water amount, at the right temperature and at the right time. The recommendation is to drink 2–3 litres of water a day (healthline.com 2020). One of the first things to do when you wake up is to drink at least 0,65 litres (3 cups) of water, because your body dehydrates during the night. This will improve your immune system, energy level and brain function at the time when you need it the most.

drink water at room temperature.

Before each meal, you should drink water at room temperature, as cool water during the meal can affect digestion. I got this tip during a business trip to Japan, where people drink hot tea with their meals.

At night, you should not drink too much.

At night, you should not drink too much, otherwise you will need to wake up just to use the bathroom, which could impact the quality of your sleep.

Summary and practical tip:

You are your best investment, so treat yourself with care by eating and drinking wisely. Consider how you would treat a racehorse you've invested in—providing the best food and care to maximize performance. Similarly, you should avoid junk food and excessive alcohol and coffee, opting instead for healthy, nutritious options. Eating your last meal 2-3 hours before bed and having a late breakfast can improve digestion and energy levels. Drink 2-3 liters of water daily, starting with 0.5 liters upon waking to rehydrate. Drink water at room temperature before meals for better digestion and avoid excessive nighttime drinking to ensure quality sleep. By adopting these habits, you can enhance your personal, family, and professional success.

Practical tip: Before each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) finish drinking your 0,75–1 litre water bottle.
