The southernmost of Thailand is in a unique and non-enviable position. It is relatively one of the poorest and least developed in Thailand. Employment opportunities are limited. Education and probably health, using conventional standards, in the past and present, have been and are below par. Worst, its history has been and is tainted with violence primarily from inept governance over a majority who is of a different culture and religion as compared to most areas in Thailand. This had resulted in indiscriminate violence from various groups including the government and the religious extremists, with the expected outcome in which the majority of the population (of all cultures) had to absorb the brunt of the conflict.

Children living in four of Thailand’s predominantly Muslim southernmost provinces Narathiwat, Pattani, parts of Songkhla and Yala suffer both anxiety and stress due to the daily threat of violence and yearn for the day that they can live in peace according to a report released by UNICEF Thailand.
