Become the Leader YOU Are Meant to Be.

I presented on Day Two of the September 20-21 Bryan Williams Leadership Academy at the JW Bonnet Creek, Orlando, and it was a blast. I am not one for podium speeches, so we did a Q & A format, and the most energizing portion of the interaction was and always is the questions from attendees. It felt so good to be in front of people again. ?Thank you @ Bryan Williams.

In sharing my career leadership journey, complete with triumphs and failures the central theme of my talk was the following:

??As leaders navigating the career landscape always keep an eye out for high potential employees and invest in them. Whether by personally mentoring them or guiding them to those who can help them learn and grow towards realizing their full potential, sometimes yet to be recognized by the employee at the time.

??Seek out leaders you admire and ask them to mentor you. Oftentimes they see you and have already begun an informal mentoring role before you realize the relationship of mentor/mentee.

??I benefited from the investment of others at a very young age and their vision of the future helped propel me forward, helped me realize that fear is both paralyzing and galvanizing. I choose galvanizing. I choose to ACT every time rather than ruminate forever about my readiness. ?Go for it while you quietly question your readiness. We are rarely fully ready for an assignment. Surround yourself with smart, talented A players. Be present in each moment, Be open, Be curious, Be kind, and Be very giving.

??Dwell in a world of curiosity and possibilities – what I know for sure is that opportunities abound and often they show up in unfamiliar ways. Be present, be bold and push open doors that are closed or just cracked. It was my curiosity and boldness that led me to the historic leadership role at the White House.

Know that you can do hard things. And remember that failures are opportunities for you to change direction.
