Becoming an Influencer in the IP services industry in 10 steps
What I learned from reading and applying Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media by Brittany Hennessy https://www.amazon.com/Influencer-Building-Personal-Brand-Social-ebook/dp/B0776DNBP9/
- 1. Select a niche.
Hmmmm, which one are they really good at: (a) fish & chips, (b) pizza, (c) kebabs, (d) burgers, or (e) none of the above?
- 2. Apply a "First Principles Thinking" approach.
- 3. Discover and select appropriate social media channels.
Avoid directory listings that require payment of a listing/sponsorship fee such as Who's Who, Chambers, Legal 500, Doyle's, IP Stars etc. In practice, their effectiveness at indicating social proof to the market is tentative but its more like pay-to-play, and may perform slightly better than your usual listing in the Yellow Pages or White Pages. The money saved could yield a better ROI spent elsewhere.
- 4. Develop and execute your content strategy.
- 5. Content distribution, cadence, timing ,etc.
- 6. Organically grow your first degree network.
e.g. my critical number is connecting and engaging with 5 new people a day, on average. Touch base with 5 existing connections.
- 7. Meaningfully engage with your followers and connections.
e.g. share relevant information for value creation.
- 8. Evaluate your progress.
e.g. always be measuring using a spreadsheet or CRM software. Double down on your winning tactics and cut the losing ones mercilessly.
- 9. Keep updated and relevant.
- 10. Consistency and persistence is key. Don't expect immediate results within 6 months.
