Congolese refugee turns plastic waste into a profitable business | UNHCR

  • Raphael Basemi, a Congolese refugee living in Kenya, runs the largest community-led recycling enterprise in Kakuma camp. With the Kenyan government approving the Refugee Act in 2021, which calls for better refugee economic inclusion and integration, Basemi was able to reach out to companies to support improved waste management strategies. In an interview with UNHCR, Basemi shares that his initiative has helped create over 500 jobs for refugees and the local community, providing them the opportunity to earn an income and support their families.

Refugee-led Innovation Fund

  • The Refugee-led Innovation Fund is now open to applications from refugee-led organizations worldwide. The Fund proposes a change in the way humanitarian assistance and development aid is designed and implemented so that forcibly displaced people have more control over the decisions affecting their lives and communities. The applications are due by 31 May 2024.

Rai Friedman is a Social Impact Consultant who specializes in Policy and Advocacy as it relates to Refugee and Human Rights Issues.

Currently Rai is a project manager for:

  • Research Project with Refugee-led Organisations at Kakuma Refugee Camp and the University of Edinburgh
