I’ve been asked to share details about how to become a professional coach.
Here are three simple steps:
STEP 1 - Understand what professional coaching is and is not:
Typically, a professional coach would have gone through a certification and assessment process with a reputable and approved institution, to help them acquire the competencies needed to support their clients in achieving their goals.
It is not about sharing your wealth of experience, telling others what to do or healing them from the cause of a past issue. Rather, it is about taking the ‘whole’ person into account and partnering with them in a future focused and solution-oriented manner whilst adhering to strict ethics and guidelines.
STEP 2 - Be Clear about Your Why?
Be clear why you want to become a Coach. Personally, I had always nurtured the desire to become a coach so as to support individuals to fully realise their potentials. So, when the opportunity came up, I simply aligned with it.
My journey began during a meeting with a client, where they mentioned their need for the services of a coach. I asked them to give me a couple of days to contact a few coaches and revert. To my surprise they insisted on waiting to have me coach their leaders and encouraged me to pursue professional coaching, which I did.
The certification process completely transformed me as an individual and I remain grateful to them for the encouragement in helping me achieve a dream.
STEP 3 - Contact a globally recognized coaching organization:
I had every confidence when choosing the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as it is the leading and largest coaching organization globally with over 40,000 + ICF Members in 143 countries.
In addition, Its credentialing process provides a high standard of accountability and is the only globally recognized professional coaching certification.
