Because You Really Can

Because You Really Can

Our 7th book is a so-called “children’s book”.

We needed to shift gears, change tracks, and quickly add this genre to our list.  We had to do this because simply written and beautifully illustrated children’s books carry powerful messages for us too.  Unfortunately, somewhere, somehow, we have conditioned ourselves out of those messages.  We forget what we have read about :  the merit of hard work; of never-giving up; of getting up even if we fall (again and again); and of helping others. It would be a grand social experiment to understand what happens to all these messages we so endearingly absorb as children, but so carelessly neglect as adults. Where do they go?

At a time when we need to persevere, stay on task, keeping doing our work, demonstrate courage, ask for help from unexpected sources, and offer help to everyone, we are recommending: The Little Engine That Could, by Watty Piper. https://bit.ly/2QZX6wq

This story is about a train carrying toys and other gifts for little children that breaks down along the way. While the children wait, the train asks a lot of  “big shiny engines” who pass by, for help.  But no one does. Then a little blue engine shows up.  The little blue engine is honest.  She tells the good folks on the train that she has never been over the mountain and that she isn’t very big.  But that, she thinks she can !

We love this book because when it first appeared in print, in the1930s, most ‘heroic’ characters were usually male.  The little blue engine is a ‘She’.

May we all become a little more like her.

Till then, puff… puff… chug… chug..

Thank you, Vinati for the reminder - We forget what we read about :??the merit of hard work; of never-giving up; of getting up even if we fall (again and again); and of helping others. The power in the story that tells 'we all can'.
