Because we need a day so that we can have it all... One day!
I always struggled to celebrate International Women's Day - always the same issue, why do we need to have a dedicated day to celebrate women for? I just became more comfortable about it, working around how could I contribute to a more balanced society, with this year International Women's Day theme #balanceforbetter.
A day is not the solution - and it will never be. The solution is education and empathy, it starts with knowledge or better, acknowledgement of the differences, because you can only address what you can see. And it will take us much more than a day per year to get there and educate ourselves.
Most of the time people don't even see the problems: they don't see why it hurts when they turn to the male in the room to confirm your statement, even though you are the most senior person around the table, they don't feel ashamed asking you to be kind enough to carry water or book a restaurant, but they never ask your male colleagues to do it... They don't feel the humiliation that leave you with no choice: swallow your bitterness or speak up.
But to speak up is hard, you need to be so strong already to do it. Because it shows your vulnerability, and crystallise the humiliation you are going through.
So I know a day is not enough and will never be enough - but if we want to get equal opportunities we have to use these moments to speak up collectively so that, one - future - day, we will be in a space where we can talk about people and not about gender.
And run the race starting from the same place... and not 3 rows behind.
