Beauty Where We Never Thought to Look

Beauty Where We Never Thought to Look

The Garden Party solo exhibition explores

Susan McLaughlin's free creative manifestation,

its great and unusual images, hidden meanings

and distant realities. The stronger the painting is,

the greater is its emotional power and poetic reality.

A world that allows distancing from the traditional

rules and speaks directly to one’s senses and

emotions-not simply reason and order-creates

a profound romance with nature and our relationship

with the world as a whole. Individuality and subjectivity

counteract any excessive insistence on logical thought.

In the span of works included in this exhibit we can

actually see Susan’s thesis evolve from the painting

Foxglove (2015) to Halfway to Heaven (2018). Halfway to

Heaven distills her thesis; the two paintings taken

together show us that heaven is really here on earth.

In Susan’s own description of the relationship between

the two paintings, “Time has passed, the baby has grown up

and he and his mother have moved on. Now the boat is

empty, but it still exists in perfect harmony with its environment.”

Garden Party is situated neither in choice of subject nor in

exact truth, but in a way of feeling. It teaches us to find

beauty in places where we never thought to look.
