As the year wraps up, here’s a true story that captures the power of growth and learning.
In a department store, a young makeup artist worked on a client, both the young makeup artist and the client chatting and laughing as she applied makeup.
But when 30 minutes stretched into 45 minutes of the young M.U.A. applying makeup, another artist stepped in to take over. Curious about the change of guards I moved closer to them to see what was happening.
The young artist looked distressed and immediately said, “I did a horrible job. I know how to apply makeup to my own face, but I struggle to apply makeup on others.” She was clearly being hard on herself.
To ease her worry, I put a hand on her shoulder, pretended to brush something off of it, and encouraged her to shake the experience off.
The situation wasn’t a disaster. The second artist was able to make some adjustments, and the young artist was simply going through the learning curve of applying makeup to a variety of faces.
Should she give up on her budding skill? Not at all. Could she benefit from more practice and maybe even asking for guidance sooner? Absolutely. Learning is a process, and asking for help isn’t a sign of failure; it’s part of growth.
This moment reminded me that we’re all constantly evolving in our skills. This applies to every field, including product development. You can’t become proficient in your craft without gaining hands-on experience and assistance outside of your own space, just like you wouldn’t expect to play like a pro after just a few tennis lessons.
