Monique Rodriguez, a world-renowned entrepreneur known for her $100-million Mielle Organics, will be keynote speaker at the 81st Hampton University Opening Convocation 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Self-made, Rodriguez began her business in 2014 after the loss of her son Milan during a miscarriage a year prior. Rodriguez’ loss motivated her to begin researching hair and beauty products, which she soon found a passion in. Through her testimony
and the Mielle Cares charity, Rodriguez aims to empower and unify women globally.
Why did HU choose her? What good would she bring to the Hampton University student body? With countless questions regarding Mielle Organics as well as the recent change in ownership, Rodriguez is expected to address her journey as a Black female entrepreneur and the importance of using loss to find your passion.
Chad Isaac, a junior psychology pre-med major from Harlem, New York, said, “I know that she’ll have a lot to say that could help motivate us and to stay focused with this upcoming semester. I was in attendance last year, and I believe this year’s keynote speaker will connect with me more.”
Niyah Barnett, a junior biochemistry major, minoring in psychology from South Jersey, ?said, “I’m excited to hear her speak. I think she’ll have a lot of insight for young black entrepreneurs. I remember when Mielle first came out and now that it’s on a larger scale and has been sold to different companies, I know that she’ll have a more experienced perspective.”

Anticipation is overflowing within the Hampton University student body, especially in hopes of gaining Rodriguez’s perspective following the selling of Mielle Organics. Announcements of the new management, along with many reports of hair loss and added elements left many supporters shocked.
Anisa Williams, a senior Liberal Studies major, minoring in psychology from Branchburg, New Jersey, said, “Her story is inspiring. I would really want to know why she sold her company. Once I understand why she sold her business, I’ll be able to see her for who she is, not making any assumptions or having any judgment.”

In an 18-minute speech, Rodriguez said, "I'm going to be real transparent, the highs and lows.
"Choose your hard [because everything in life is hard]. ... I am the lady that makes the product that does not make your hair fall out ... All things work out for good ["Amen! shouted someone from the rafters.]
