The Beauty of Contrasts

Exploring the Dialogue between Horizontality and Verticality in Saudi Arabia.

As a landscape architect, I am continually captivated by the strong and constant contrast between horizontality and verticality in Saudi Arabia. This ever-present dialogue between the vast horizon of the desert landscape and the daily experiences of vertical limits reflects all dimensions of this country: environmental, cultural, and spiritual.

The desert landscape draws us to the beauty of horizontality. Its immense expanse and arid nature, seemingly merging with the infinite horizon and sky, open us to a spiritual dimension, inviting contemplation of our place in the universe. In the face of this infinite expanse, we are compelled to strip ourselves of ego and reconnect with something greater. This immersive experience cultivates reflection, introspection, and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

While horizontality captivates us, verticality reveals a completely different world. The wadis, deeply carved into the ground and defined by high steep walls, offer a striking contrast to the openness of the desert. These majestic canyons, like hidden sanctuaries, harbor breathtaking flora and fauna. The rich biodiversity, vibrant with life and color, contributes to the ecological vitality and economic prosperity of the region.?

Then, the iconic site of Hegra, where the power and verticality of standing rocks are masterfully refined with deep cultural symbolism and architectural marvels, sculpted for eternity.

The verticality represents the cherished and ultimate refuge of intimacy. In the built environment, we find this facet in the contrast between the tents punctuating the vast horizontal lines of the desert and the high walls surrounding individual villas in urban areas. These vertical structures signify more than mere architectural elements; they protect and embody the core of society - the clan and its properties. Echoing the nomadic lifestyle's connection to the environment, these walls provide shelter and protection, preserving belongings and safeguarding loved ones from the aridity and the risks of the desert or the busyness of the city.

A land of contrasts, the interplay between horizontality and verticality is deeply embedded in Saudi Arabia's cultural identity, even extending to traditional attire. This attire represents modesty and humility, concealing individuality while projecting cultural heritage and social harmony. It weaves the fabric of a society that harmoniously coexists, blending societal norms with collective identity.

Exploring the dynamic between horizontality and verticality is not without challenges, as the contrast can be intense. The vast desert horizons and the nomadic spirit awaken our senses, evoking openness and a sense of exchange, inspiring modesty and humility in the face of nature and its elements. On the other hand, the treasures lie behind the verticalities, requiring invitation or familiarity to discover them. Accessing these treasures is a privilege, an honor. Behind the walls lie wealth, life, beauty, and culture, rooted in values of family, and heritage.

As a designer, it is paramount to integrate and celebrate this intriguing dialogue. By embracing the beauty of the contrast between horizontality and verticality, we can create environments that foster a stronger connection between a society and its natural context, while paying homage to the culture. Let us seize this opportunity to unlock the true potential of this captivating contrast and contribute to the landscapes that shape the identity of Saudi Arabia.
