The Beauty of Birdair: Iolani School's New Campus Oasis
Birdair, Inc.
Birdair is the leading specialty contractor for custom tensile membrane structures throughout the world.
The Iolani School, located in the beautiful city of Honolulu, Hawaii, has recently unveiled an exciting addition to its campus in 2023 that is not just a visual marvel but also a testament to tensile architecture. Iolani Lower School features a courtyard and stage tensile canopy structure incorporating a series of PTFE triangular sails with a total combined surface area of 2,700 square feet and a stage structure with a solid PTFE fabric of approximately 1,000 square feet. Birdair's scope included design, fabrication, and installation of the PTFE-coated fiberglass fabric.
When one thinks of Hawaii, images of breathtaking natural beauty come to mind: lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of life. The Iolani School's new Birdair structure, however, blends seamlessly into this landscape, providing a harmonious extension of its surroundings. Designed to be a multi-purpose space, it serves as a gathering spot for students, faculty, and visitors alike, fostering a sense of community and connection.
What makes this structure truly special is its material: Birdair PTFE-coated fiberglass. This innovative material offers a range of benefits that align perfectly with Iolani School's values of sustainability and environmental stewardship. It is highly durable, withstanding the challenging weather conditions of Hawaii, including intense sunlight, high humidity, and occasional heavy rains. Additionally, its translucent nature allows natural light to filter through, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere inside.
The Birdair PTFE-coated fiberglass material also reflects the school's commitment to sustainability. It is made from a blend of recyclable materials, reducing its environmental impact. Additionally, its energy-efficient design helps to reduce the building's carbon footprint, making it a truly green addition to the campus.

Moreover, the flexibility and versatility of this material allow for endless design possibilities. The architects at Iolani School were able to create a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The structure's organic curves and airy design evoke a sense of movement and flow, adding a dynamic element to the campus.
